  • Removing oxidation and taking out fine scratches

Using Meguiar's five-step method, I've kept my new 300 looking better than when I bought it, over a year ago. My wife is jealous. I'm buying her a Mustang.

I need to sell her old van, and the paint has been neglected for years. Using the Porter-Cable polisher, which cleaning or buffing compound would be safe for a new guy to use, to remove superficial scratches without damaging the paint?

    Thank you.

Probably #80 would be your best bet. Is it clear coated or single stage?

and I would keep in mind to always start off with the least aggressive product on a test spot to determine its effect on your paint before doing your whole car that way. The usual list you'll find is Scratch X, first then #80 and the strongest and safest on the PC you can go without scouring your finish is #83 and the 8006 pad. Plus, never be tempted to use a cutting pad 7006 and a more abrasive product in the hopes that'll do it. Proper technique, the correct product and pad will do it and safely. So start light and test as you go.

If you are looking to just spruce up the van in order to sell it, and you have a PC, you might consider this. After a thorough wash and dry, apply Color-X wax with an 8006 polishing pad. If time and inclination permit a top coat of NXT.

I have done this for friends that will continue to take their vehicle to the "auto-swirl carwash" anyway. Why invest so much time and effort into something that will not be appreciated, or cared for.

If you have a couple of isolated scratches, use Scratch-X as needed.
