  • "Curb Rash"

    Hello,

I have a friend that has scraped his aluminum rims on a curb. the damage removed some metal (so scratchX isn't going to work). I think that it would be best to use fine grit sand paper to smooth it out, then I want to tape the area off and hit it with clear paint. Do you guys think this approach is going to work?

    thanks, nick

Is it already painted, or bare aluminum?

it is clear coated. the scrape is on the lip. I am not sure how to post pics. in the thread, but I uploaded a picture that shows what I am dealing with. that pic. isn't the rim, it is one i found online, but they look the same

Check for the how-to post pictures how-to.... likely you are clicking on the wrong url.

As far as the wheels, yeah, they look painted, so may as well cover the metal up I guess. Could use a spray, or try getting a bottle of clear and painting it on with a tiny brush.

I thought that somewhere I read the following; After sanding down the scratches on your rims, you apply "bondo Putty". Let it dry, sand down to make it smooth. Repeat if needed. Then tape off now affected areas, spray the rims, allow to dry, then spray your clearcoat. I think that was the procedure that I read.

They are painted rims so you could get the paint matched for the repair, clear coat alone won't really help.

just grab some touch-up paint in a similar silver to hide it, the brush-on type would be better as you dont want overspray.
