  • getting shoe polish off glass

a buddy of mine has had his camaro parked for awhile, and went to the track in the fall, well he had wiped all the numbers off his car previously, but i guess left about 30-40 little specks on the window, tryed getting them off with just windex and did nothing,he asked me how the heck to get it off?and i really didnt know what to tell him.i was thinking maybe goof off,or a paint cleaner but didnt really know if those would be safe on the outside of the glass.so my ? to you guys is how to get it off? thanks

You can use a razor blade if you are very careful, or 0000 steel wool will work. Next time, use 'glass chalk'. It comes off a lot easier.

You could also try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I used it to get tint glue off of windows before and it didn't scratch at all. The thing is pretty cool. It has a lot of uses.

I would try getting a window scrapper. You can usually find them in the paint departments. They are used for scraping the paint off your windows when painting your house. It is basically a holder for a razor blade and allows you to put some decent pressure on the window to scrape it off. I would also spray the window with window cleaner or amonia water and let it sit there for a while before scrapping so it soaks in and makes it soft.

If that doesn't work I would try some PlastX or ScratchX. I have used PlastX on windows many times and even removed fine scratches in glass with the product.

I have let my numbers sit in the sun for days, and they just washed right off.

You could try a Body Solvent/Bug and Tar Remover. I'm sure both would get the job done easily. As already mentioned: The Magic Eraser, a plastic razor blade, a window scraper with lots of lubricant, etc...

I've been to the track plenty of times and they always use white shoe polish to "paint" the numbers on windows. Before leaving the track my friends and I ALWAYS use a razor blade to remove the bulk of it and then just a regular glass cleaner and terry towel for the final clean up. Never had an issue of any kind and I'm talking 3 windows per car times 4 or 5 cars per event times 20+ events. That's something like 250~300 windows trouble free.

I worked at a dealership and used Razor blades to get everything off windows. Never had any problems.

I agree, go with a razor blade. I'd rather cut my fingers than have my car with shoe polish. My hands will heal
