  • minor damage from service visit.

I had my oil changed today at a place where I have had excellent service in the past. Today was a little different. I did my normal and pulled in, popped the hood and walked around front to open, removed the oil cap and let them do their thing. They asked me to start up the car so they can check some fluid levels after the oil change. I sat down and started the car, looked up and the tech was rubbing on the front passanger fender with a red shop towel. I screamed at him to stop as soon as I noticed but it was too late. He said he had dripped oil and wanted to get if off the paint fast. I am not mad about it because he did not know and was trying to do the right thing. I got home and pulled out the xeon light to take a look. There was so much dust and still you could see the scratches. I UQD' and took a second look around the car to find several more spots on the side doors and rear fender also. They are not deep and can probably be removed with #80. But I have a road trip to visit a high school friend over the weekend and am leaving Saturday morning early. I will only have a few hours on friday night to take care of this. By the way it is supposed to rain during the day friday so I will have to wash well before I polish. The problem is #80 micro mars my paint and I normally follow with #82 on a finishing pad. If I can keep it to a wash and two steps with the PC I should have enough time. I do have #66 and have good results with using that but I also have the NXT 2.0 and really wanted to use that. Does the NXT have enough cleaners to remove the micro marring with a 8006 or 9006 pad? I have not tried #66 with a 8006 pad, maybe that would be enough to remove the defects and not leave the micro marring. I could then follow with the NXT 2.0. I know thats kinda backwards but would not be upset if the NXT removed the #66 as long as there was no marring left. Any thoughts, I have about 18 hours to decide?

    Thanks

    Dan

What about using M82, then NXT on an 8006 if the M82 doesn't get rid of it all? The fastest way to tell would be a couple of test spots.

I have been thinking about a couple of things. I thought about trying #80 with a finishing pad and see if that gives enough bite to remove the defects with leaving the micro marring. I also thought about using the #82 or the NXT with a polishing pad to see how it works. The problem I have is I only have one polishing and one finishing pad. I have plenty of pads already dedicated such as several 8006 for #80 & #83, a few 9006 for #82 and several 9006 for my LSP's. I am going to do a couple of test spots but want to have a good idea first so I dont waste too much time although I know from expreience that doing the whole car and it not working is a bigger waste of time.

      Thanks

      Dan

I guess I don't understand clearcoat so well. It's supposed to protect the paint, and have a hard coating on top. Why does it scratch so easily from a swipe of a shop towel? Plus, I assume Dan had a protectant on top of the clearcoat. Is all our waxing/sealant for naught?

The clear does protect the paint, in a way. Not like your thinking though. To add, a microscopic layer of wax is not going to create an indestructible barrier against anything and everything for the paint.

This to me, seems to be the reason someone who tries out a wax and if something scratches, chips, or removes the paint of the car, it is labeled as a bad product, which is completely not true.

There are dozens of threads here and in the archive that explain this answer in more detail. Mike may even chime in on this one as well.

I would try M82 with the 8006 if something else quicker doesn't work. Some have had luck with NXT removing micro marring when applied with the PC.

If it's only a few spots why not try some ScratchX by hand?

Right now I am thinking about the #66 and an 8006 pad. If this works without marring I will just go with that and stop there for now. If not I may do #80 with a 8006 pad in just the spots that need it, follow with #82 or #66 and a 9006 over the whole car and then Maybe NXT 2.0.

I have had great success with M66 and an 8006 pad. Put it on speed 5 and go!

Is the micro-marring left by #80 exclusive to your specific paint type or is it known to leave marring on all paint finishes? Is it always necessary to follow #80 with some type of a swirl remover, or do I simply have to wait and see how #80 reacts to my particular finish? I'm a newcomer when it comes to working with a PC and recently picked up #80 hoping to remove some light dealer instilled swirls and scratches from a new Tahoe. I got the impression that #80 (being a cleaner/polish) topped with wax was all that would be necessary to remove my swirls. Also, could somebody clarify exactly what the term "micro-marring" refers to? Thanks.

It depends on the paint and the technique. I thought it micro marred my paint until I went at it a couple more times and found it was me. Some paints will though. You just have to make sure it is the paint, not you.

It is very possible M80 and wax will be all you need, but until you try it out, you won't know.

Micromarring means the paint looks hazed, unclear.
