  • help my trailblazer ss

hey guys....first post and i need some help lol. i just bought a 07 trailblazer ss and it's black. heres some pictures and you can see my problem. its basically GM paint lol. im a body guy but all my stuff is wet sanded to perfection so i usually dont have to work with polishes and cleaners and stuff. usually 2000 grit sand paper and a quick run over with the buffer takes care of it. but anyways back to my point...definately dont want to take that route. so heres the pics before tonight (dont have any pics of after yet but its not much better.) i couldnt post them and ask for help earlier because my account hadnt been validated.

    before detail

    AFTER detail

so anyways..since i took those pics ive clayed it (since it was on the lot for 6 months i figured it wouldnt hurt) 2 applications paint cleaner, two applications of polish, and 2 coats of nxt. its much less intense and the paint is much blacker and wetter. (those pics were taken when it was cloudy to by the way) but its still there...any help on making it look smooth?

EDIT: so there yo have it...not much better than it was. much darker black and wetter though

Are you referring to orange peel in the paint?

    Or something else?

After doing all the things you listed that you've done so far, the clear coat paint should be pretty clear and smooth and the effect this will have, or should have is to give you a dark black, high gloss finish.

If you're not getting these kind of results with all that cleaning and polishing then it might be that you'll have to machine polish the clear to restore more clarity.

The way you remove orange peel is you wet-sand the finish till you flatten it out and the compound it to remove your sanding marks. If this is the "factory" finish, usually this means it will be very hard and also what most people would consider thin for wet-sanding, in other words you don't really want to try sanding down your factory paint job with the hopes of being able to remove all your sanding marks, restore the gloss and never burn through anywhere.

When you hear the words wet-sanding, or color-sanding, remember most of this is always done on fresh paint, like a day or two old when the paint is still soft enough to buff your sanding marks out. Most body shops that plan on sanding the fresh paint are also spraying enough on to be able to safely sand and cut the paint without any thinning issues.

Help it to look smooth? If you're talking about the orange peel then, being a body shop guy, I'm afraid you know the answer - and you basically already stated it; wet sand, cut and buff. I don't blame you though for not wanting to do this on a factory finish, but you can't really just polish out orange peel.

I am a bit surprised that there's that much though.

If its new, shouldn't GM have to fix it at their expense?

you me and the rest of my car buddies...my wifes g6 was the same way (it was black also) but when we got hers it had been neglected for a while...i got it out but i had to buff it with 3m smr. im wondering if it comes from sitting on the lot for a while with no wash or anything...i mean it comes from the manufacturer with no wax. the dealer washes it...with no waxing done....and then it sits in the sun for 6 months...that cant be good for the paint. im gonna talk to the dealer and see what they can do..(i got some aluminum cleaner over spray on the door to and you can guess what happened lol)

This option seems to be standard on most vehicles now-a-days. Our Jeep WK is covered in it..

About 99% of the cars sold would need to be repainted.

Its not a new option from GM. I have a 05 Trailblazer and it too has the peel.

im gonna put 37 coats of wax on it and make it have the illusion of "smooth" lol. i was talkin to my buddy last night hes ssaid we could prolly throw a couple of coats of clear on it and wet sand it that way we wont have to worry about uv protection....it ***** though my grandads 75 chevy pickup looks better than this...but its never seen rain or mud either lol.
