  • Clearcoat Thickness

Hi everyone, need some info on paintwork.

Can anyone out there give me an indicative figure of, roughly, how many passes of the individual combo listed below when applied using a rotary will cut through the clear coat (assuming normal clear coat with uniform thickness):

    1. M83/W7006 = passes until cut through clear coat
    2. M83/W8006
    3. M83/W9006
    4. M80/W7006
    5. M80/W8006

Trying to guesstimate how many passes I can safely do my car's paint and when to send it to the pros to measure properly cuz I really hate those swirls that keep coming back no matter how careful you are when washing. Not economical for a DIY and weekend detailer like me to buy the measuring device for non-commercial detailing.

    Thanks guys.

p.s. An indicative figure would do. I know there are a lot of variables involved.

Have you used any machine at all before?

If not, with a rotary you could be through your cars paint in about 1 pass if you dont know what you are doing...

      Re: Clearcoat Thickness

No answer for this question that would have any merit due to too many factors involved that would void any kind of "blanket statement".

Here's the irony, most people struggle with removing defects, that is most people struggle with removing enough paint to remove the defects. The problem is rarely people having to easy of a time removing tons of paint quickly, the problem is removing any at all.

Recent Example of not being able to remove enough paint

Sorry we don't have an answer for your questions, but for what it's worth, for most people, the fear of removing too much paint is unwarranted. The fear of not getting the results you want, (while not really a fear), is a concern because in most case the hardness of most clear coats make it difficult to remove paint using a DA polisher.

Besides that, most people after learning how to remove defects and get the paint on their car to the place they want it to be, then learn how to take care of it so they don't have to go back and remove defects again or in other words... remove paint again.

      What are you working on?
What are you trying to accomplish?

Here's an interesting thread worth reading...

Mike is right of course, but I'm not sure if he realized you are working with a rotary. As Murr mentioned, with a rotary, you can burn through the clear coat in one pass if you don't know what you are doing.
