  • How much to take to do a detail in another state...

    Hey all,

One on my Uncle's just got a brand new M5 (08) and has an 07 Toyota Sienna. I did a full 5 step with the DA last X-Mas on the Sienna but he wants that done again as well as his M5. He lives in Arizona and last time we drove over with all my stuff and my parents stayed for a day and I stayed for a week. So he (my uncle) flew me back as part of my payment for detailing his car but I couldn't fly back with any of my products. We ended up paying close to $200 to ship it all back here, which is ridiculous.

So heres the question...I'm going to buy a bunch of travel sized bottles for all my products so I just take what I need and can throw away the bottles there. So how much do you think I need of everything. I'm thinking the Sienna will get M83 and the M5 M80. Both will get NXT 2.0. So I'm putting together a list of what I'll need. I'll have the local car wash wash them before hand (he just wants the outsides done) and thats fine with him. So I just need stuff to detail the exterior.

    UQD - 10oz
    Last Touch (Claying) - 15oz
    Hot Shine Gel - 5oz
    Glass Cleaner - 5oz
    NXT Tech Wax 2.0 - 5oz
    M80 - 12oz
    M83 - 12oz
    NXT Tech Protect - 5oz
Gold Class Trim Detailer - 5oz
    Hyper Dressing - 5oz
    Microfibers
    W-9006 - 1
    W-8006 - 6
    DA

Anything else I might need and do those quantities sound about right?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

Wouldn't it be easier to use the Meguari's store finder and buy the stuff when you get there?

Not really because I have almost every Meguiar's product and I would still have the issue of how to get it back. If I do just bring travel sizes then I would let have the extra's.

Ouch... Shipping can cost a fortune sometimes.

I would add a W9006 polishing pad and some M82 just in case the paint is super sensitive. Also, some M39 or tape.

Tape of course...forgot to add that. I'll add another 9006, was on the border on that one.

Thanks...do you think those sizes are correct?

I think that by adding the last item or two, you have it covered. The sizes sound like they will be enough. Good luck with the 2 details.

Why not drop the tire gel, and use HD. If you are only doing outside I also don't really see a need for the NXT tech protect

I think you need to get a degreaser in there...or are you not doing the engine. I would also add Q-tips and a Xenon light. I might also bring a hint more #80. 12oz should be more than enough, but I am not entirely sure how much a van would need.

Send him your wish list and have him stock up with what you need, or find the nearest Meguiar's jobber and buy the materials when you get there. If he's willing to pay your airfare, the cost of the supplies is a drop in the bucket!

I'll add a couple things in reply...

                    1. Not doing the engines but I'll add a degreaser just in case.
                    2. Not going for swirl free for a couple reasons:

                      2. Not going for swirl free for a couple reasons:
                      a. He truly doesn't car about the swirls, just wants them to look pretty good.
                      b. He takes them to the local car wash (which does pretty good job), but it still gets swirled a little.
                      c. The M5 is brand new so I'm just looking to add depth and protection for it.
                      d. The Sienna and the garage met eachother a couple months ago and the garage didn't like the van and made its feelings noticable. The scratches are too deep and pulls away from a swirl free finish.
                      e. He keeps his cars no more than 2-3 years, so it's pointless to have them look good (to him at least).
                      3. Not sure why I added the NXT Tech Protect, I'll remove it.

                      Think thats it.

I'd tell him to bring his vehicles to you ....
Otherwise, little bottles is a good idea. I hope your not flying there and back airlines have very strict policies now about anything (LIQUID)

Well if you haven't guessed he is pretty wealthy and I love going to his house for a week every once in a while. He has two kids (6 and 8) that love me so its nice to get away from the house and visit them every once and a while. He's also taking me to a rink side hockey game. Plus all my dads side of the family lives there with in like 30 minutes of each other. The current plan is for my dad and I to drive out there and he'll be there for a day or two and I'll stay until the 4th and fly into the Irvine airport and go to the Batmobile thing. So if I just bring enough to do the cars then I can throw the bottles away (there like 50cents) and just fly back with the towels, pads and DA.

Great news....I got a couple more clients while I'm going to be over there. It's going to be more of a business trip than vacation, but hey car detailing is fun. More good news, my parents are driving over and my uncles and aunts are going to drive me back, so I can bring all the detailing stuff I need. Also ADS is in about a 20 miles radius of all the clients so if I run out of anything, I should be able to just swing by...

my stepson tried to bring his acne medicine in bottles of less than 12 oz (the proactive or whatever it is, 3-4 bottles anyway), may want to check with the airline your flying with and see what the limits are and go from there.....

Or....get some sample packs from ADS and have them shipped to your Uncle's house and leave them there for the next trip or use them up on your new clients....

Good luck and congrats on the new clients.
