  • advice regarding the mirror glaze range...

gday all just after a bit of advice regarding paint cleaning, swirl removal and polishing. at the moment im using speed detailer (cant use water to wash car due to local restrictions-get a $150 fine if youre caught) to get rid of dirt and grime, usually quik clay with the speed detailer (every second detail), #9 swirl remover 2.0 (foam applicator and terry towel), colour boost (old version of colour X), and NXT liquid wax. all applied by hand, with foam pads and terry towels, and a MF detailing cloth for the final wipe after the wax has cured (by the way i find this is the best way to avoid holograms-particularly using liquid waxes-after waxing, finish buffing off and let it sit in the sun for a couple of hours, and wipe down with a microfibre). maintained with speed detailer every weekend. while this gives great results, i think im missing out on a polishing stage, and im obsessed with reflections and minimising swirls etc. im not really keen on moving to an RO or rotary as i love detailing by hand, but at the same time of course i want the best results possible. im detailing 2pak metallic bronze/orange paint (colour can be seen in my avatar) applied from factory. my questions are:

    a) can speed glaze be applied by hand? what sort of results could i expect using this product and method? also is speed glaze a cutting/cleaning/polishing compound or mostly polishing? how effective is it with removing swirls?

    b) regarding show car glaze, again what sort of results could i expect using my own two hands? what sort of extra steps do i need to take applying it by hand?

    c) bodyshop professional hand polish, what sort of results does this polish deliver, is it comparable to the above two products?

    d) does using speed detailer as a wash/cleaner have any adverse effects on my results? i mean does it diminish the effectiveness of the polishes/waxes by leaving a coating on the paint before i apply polish?

while #9 is working well for me i find it needs at least 2 or 3 applications to get really clear results, which is a bit of a pain. so am i better off using #80 first, or after #9 maybe? very happy with NXT aswell, just have to find the time to do 2 coats! finally am i better off just biting the bullet and getting an RO sander/buffer, risking losing the love of detailing?

thanks in advance for any info or advice, its much appreciated.

    cheers, tim.

    A) & B) Yes, it can be used by hand. IMO, you might be better off using something like Scratch-X if you have it, but if you work it in enough...I honestly can not say how it will turn out as I have never used it by hand, but you can. It has a light cut/clean/polish to it.

    C) Never used it.

    D) I wouldn't think so. If product won't come off, you will probably need to use QD to get it off. I used it to wipe off the car after every step in the DC system.

I used #9 by hand, and was not happy with the results by hand. I think #80 would work better than #9 by hand.

If you want to work by hand, you are probably better off using products from the Consumer Line such as:

    ScratchX
    ScratchX

    Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner
    Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner

    Deep Crystal Polish

    Deep Crystal Polish

Mirror Glaze products are more intended for the DAP.
