  • PlastX OK for regular use?

I purchased some PlastX to clear up some headlights on my wife's car. The first test was positive but not a miracle I was wanting. Maybe I need to try it some more. What should my expectations really be?

The product description and posts in this forum seem to point to using it on REGULAR basis as a PREVENTATIVE product on clear plastic parts (headlights, instrument clusters) from hazing or yellowing. Since it seems abrasive as it is a polish, how often should you use it since I do not want to start degrading something that is new and looks good.

im pretty sure it depends on how much elbow grease you put into it...i dont think you should worry..except if you are wetsanding..so use more passes by hand..

btw..ever use the plast x for an ipod?..haha..

I use plastX roughly 3-4 times a yr by hand. granted my car is a 2003 so it doesnt need much work. like the above poster stated, give it some muscle! after you get the results you want, just apply it as you would apply a normal polish(not to much muscle at all). hope that helps a bit

        Thanks all.

I tried it again this morning (several times) on my wife's 2001 car and it is definitely clearer but still looks aged. When I rub (medium muscle) with the applicator pad, it sounds rough and feels rough when removing with a MF towel. I think I will try again later and post some pics for more advice. It may be just pitted deeply by debris that no polish can fix.

Sometimes the plastic may be too far gone and need to be wetsanded to get most of the dead plastic off.

Can M-80 with the D/A be used on plastic headlight lens?

I need to get some slight pitting and scratches out that PlastX isn't handling.

I think you would need to do sanding...ADS has a kit for it.

PlastX is an excellent product, but you can't expect it to take out extreme damage like rock pecks and extreme pitting. There is no other product that would work other than bearing down and wetsanding it.

#80 is not aggressive enough, either.

                  Update...

Using just an terry cloth type applicator, it still needs work after quite a few scrubbings. Can I use steel wool (I saw 0000 mentioned somewhere) to try to put more muscle into it?

Re: PlastX OK for regular use?

                    Ummmmm......No

I WOULD NOT use steel wool on any plastic. Steel wool is meant for use on metals. I've heard of its use on glass, but I really don't trust it. Steel wool would put more scratches in the headlights due to the fact that headlights are usually soft plastic.

At most, I would use some fine wetsanding paper (1500 and 2000) to get the scratches out. Then, I would follow that up with PlastX. Here is the process that Joe did to repair some tail lights: http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forums...ead.php?t=5185

It seems as though you are reaching the limits of PlastX. PlastX simply is not able to level the plastic surface because it would take something seriously abrassive.

Simply put, if you are still not happy with the results of Plast-X, either they need to be sanded or replaced.

I think you are right. There is just TOO much information here since a search yields a lot of hits. I finally found the link to a similar discussion in another forum here. I think they recommend a different Meg's product (Diamond something) that I cannot obtain locally nor do I have a sander product. The closest thing I see locally is something called mothers power ball that seems to go on a drill.

You don't need a sander. You use your hand or drill.

Plast X is great. When I bought my Mustang from the dealership it looked like the car went through a dust storm. The headlights were that yellow/ brown color. I used the Megs Plastic cleaner then the plastX and wow my headlights were like almost new looking. But after a while I did not apply that stuff for a while the headlights started to turn back to a not so clear look they started to haze a little. So I am guessing that I will always have to apply it once a week.
