  • Make Chrome Molding SHINEY!!!

    Another old car question....
My son's Chevelle has LOTS of chrome molding around the edge of his vinyl top and then along the length of the body. I have used Wenol, but it just won't sparkle.
Hope someone has a safe solution.
    Thanks!

    Re: Make Chrome Molding SHINEY!!!

Although I haven't tried it, I read that NXT metal polish is the bomb these days. I have used good ol' Turtle Wax Chrome polish on my chrome until I run out then I will get the NXT stuff. My only concern is that the turtle wax has abrasives in it, not sure though.

Try the NXT stuff, read that the stuff is great.

Have fun with the Chevelle, great car.

        Re: Make Chrome Molding SHINEY!!!

Being that it’s an old Chevelle it probably is real chrome.
        .... let’s say it is.

I would prep it (tape off were just the chrome molding is showing) far enough so that your comfortable with the amount of tape on each side of the molding that works with the tools and product you choose.

Use some #80 on a 3" foam polishing pad on a PC or polishing ball of some kind (there’s a lot of options here.... ADS has a felt metal polishing kit for example) on a drill. Then just apply your favorite wax. That’s usually how I polish-up my chrome.

I don’t have any experience with NXT metal polish but, most metal polishes are for non-coated metals like aluminum, brass, copper and the such. Chrome is a coating.... I’ve seen this discussed here on MOL many times.

It could be that it’s just worn out and has lost it’s luster and pop, if that’s the case, you may be stuck with what it is or have it re-chromed.

Is it possible its aluminum? IMO, that would be great. You could make it really shine! With the NXT metal polish of course.

FWIW, even though I use the method I stated above. A guy that owned a muffler shop & his own chrome plating business told me once that "chrome either shines or it don’t.....clean with windex".

Mike may have a better solution for ya.
        Good luck.
