  • Using his hands instead of a wash cloth/mitt/towel

My Brother in law tells me that he likes to use his bare hands to wash his car.

He claims that he can feel the dirt and rinses it away instead of scratching the finish.

    Anyone else use this method?

Anyone have reasons NOT to do this?

Your hands don't absorb or whisk away the dirt particles. Sounds like a horrible idea.

^ I agree. Your hands do not have the ability to move dirt away from the paint like a mitt will.

I understand where he is coming from when he says he can feel the dirt and rinse it away, but if the vehicle has been driven in the rain or any kind of dirt, there will be to much dirt.

            That does not make sense.

You don't feel small particles of dirt on your hand. You feel the particles of dirt being squashed between your hand and the paint. That's basically just grinding them into the paint.

I guess if you're lucky they squish themselves into your skin instead of the paint but I wouldn't bet on it.

How do his hands absorb soap to bring it up to the paint?

No soap, If a car is dirty he doesn't really have to feel the dirt to know it's there ?

I remember about 15 years ago. The late great Walter Payton of the NFL, was showing how he does his chores around the house. One of his chores was washing his cars by hand. No wash bucket, nothing. In one hand he held his hose, and with the other hand just rub the finish. Claimed it was the best way to wash a car. It still makes me shudder. lol lol
