This is one that could go on forever. I have been of the theory that you go with the lines of the body of the car, so yes, side to side. I was always told that anytime you go in circles you promote swirl, even if it's a great product and proper application material. But if I'm trying to avoid the buffer and work on problem spots, it's circular.
