  • Problem After Moping..

Just got my used Mazda MX5 MK3 in silver and it looks great. However when I collected it it had some fine scratches along one side from what looked like a close encounter with a tree/bramble. The dealeship took a look and advised me that it would mop out easily. They did as promised and all the scratches are gone. The problem I have now is that prior to moping my car there was a scratch on the passenger door that was a little bit more substantial than the others. It wasnt down through primer but it could be felt. After having the car home for a few days I have now noticed that where this scratch was I now have a slightly dull area approx 6inces long and an inch wide. It looks just like someone has breathed on a cold pannel and you get that fog/haze look. When I run my hand over it it is smooth and feels like the rest of the car. I have tried using a good quality wax over the area and I have applied approx ten coats, but when the sun hits the car you can see this mark. As stated it looks hazey or dusty. Is there anything I can do to remove this? Am I waisting my time waxing over the area? Does it mean too much clearcoat has been removed. Please, Please, Please help... My car looks great appart from this haze area.

hi slinnky,it sounds like the dealer ship may have held a rotary a little to long on that spot and taken the paint down a little to far or burned it a little. i'd start with scratchX using foam applicator pad and using about 10 to 15 pounds of pressure with hand and work back and forth motion and work that small area tell the product becomes some what clear. then wipe with micro-fiber towl to see results, it may take a couple try's. if no improvments , it just might be burned or need more aggressive product hard to reccomend anything with out first seeing area. try that first and if didn't help post back.

Thanks for thr quick reply to my post, I will certainly give it a try. As stated it looks a bit like a haze. Waxing it has certainly reduced the appearance a little but not completely. If I follow your advice, will this harm the clearcoat surface? Just checking because I dont want to have to go down the road of a respray. New to this stuff so just want to get it right.
      Thank you once again.

        Hey,

Can you see little lines in the dull area or is it smooth?

It sounds like either they wet sanded the scratch and did not remove their sanding marks or more likely they rotary buffed the scratch to the point that they have burned through the clear coat, leaving a dull finish.

If they have burned through, there is nothing you can do except repaint the area. Sorry.

          Re: Problem After Moping..

Just had another look and there are a few very fine scratches within the haze area of paintwork. Having applied about ten layers of wax the finish is smooth to the touch just like the rest of the bodywork, but this haze is still present. You have to get down on your knees and look realy close along the car to see it but it is still there. It does however seem a little less noticeable than before I waxed it. I have tried taking photos with a 10 Mega pixel camera at different angles, but it does not show up on film. If I thought that continuing to wax it would make it disappear then I would wax it all night, but after ten plus coats its still there. I am not sure if its the clearcoat or not. I do know that they said they were going to mop the car along the offending side to get rid of some minor scratches and one not so minnor, ie the area that has the haze.
I have emailed the dealer to make them aware, but i'm not sure they will do anything about it at the moment. Perhaps some people would just accept it and enjoy their car, but its driving me nuts. I like the bodywork to be clean and well mainitained and this spoils the line.
