  • Explain this ...!

Explain this video. I was under the impression the meguiars cutting pad W7006, was not for this purpose, because of the hazing factor. Only good when used with bonnet to remove wax..

Yeah I saw this there are a few products which are made for rotary which people have tried on pc and have had amazing results and the pad they use are light cutting pads, it does give some micromarring which is why you need to go over it with softer pad with a lighter polish to remove the micromarring.

I am thinking about trying it out on an old car to see how it works.

Just because it isnt recommended doesnt mean it cant be done. But if it doesnt turn out right, you're on your own.

The recommendations are based on what will work best overall on 95% or so of all the paint types/situations out there, and with only slightly experienced people.

Once someone is more experienced, they can get more creative with pads, products, etc, but again, they have to know what they are doing.

I was searching You Tube about a week ago and ran across that video, I found it interesting as well.

You know, I'm almost sure he is using it at speed 6. I've yet to touch speed six, but it sounds faster than speed 5. Again, another unapproved method.

Meguiar's does not recommend using a W7006 with the DA because the average person (ie, someone who's not a Car Crazy detailing fanatic like members of this board) may not understand the hazing and what's needed to correct it. There is too high a potential for people to not fully understand the overall process and end up dissatisfied with the result. There is a time and place for each tool in the detailing process, but using the wrong tool at the wrong time can lead to problems.

Having said that, I've used a cutting pad with M83 on a car where M80 on a polishing pad just wasn't getting the job done. I knew full well that the paint wouldn't look its best after this step and that I would need to follow with M80 on a polishing pad. Which meant I was going to need almost double the time to correct the problems and get the results I wanted. But I really didn't have a choice - I own a rotary but I'm not very proficient with it yet and didn't want to "learn" on a car that wasn't mine. In the end everything came out beautifully and the owner was thrilled.

              That's correct.

It's not that it can't be done, but when most people find the pad hazing or scouring or micro-marring their clear coat instead of knowing what to do next they tend to panic and then post something like this on a forum somewhere...

Couldn't have said it or typed it better myself.

Nowhere in the video did it say what type of paint they were working on? Point being is that there are so many different types of paint systems on the market today, and cars with paint systems that no longer exist that just because a specific pad with a specific chemical worked on a specific type of paint, it doesn't mean you can go out into your garage and use the same system on your car's paint and get the same results.

This is why we always stress the importance of doing a Test-Spot using your choice of pad, product and procedure to one small area and make sure you can make that one small area look good before going over the entire car.

Also keep in mind that the paint looked great when he was done in that video... in that lighting condition...

What would it look like in full on sun or with a Swirl Finder light when viewed with experienced and discerning eyes?

Reminds me of two photos posted on another forum of the same car; in one shot the car looked like it had a swirl-free, flawless finish, a picture of the same car only with the shot taken from a different angle and a different lighting conditon showed the car was a complete swirled out mess.

I would bet $100.00 dollars in different lighting conditions the paint would look scoured. No big deal because anyone with any experience in machine polishing, (like hopefully the guy in the video), would know that the type of work he was doing was just the first step of a multi-step process. Even if the paint did look flawless in the sun, or flawless after wiping it with a 50/50 mixture of Isopropyl alcohol and water and then inspecting, at a minimum it would need an application of some type of paint protectant to finish the process unless it was fresh paint. Even then, most Pro's would re-polish the entire car with a less aggressive pad and a less aggressive product.

Meguiar's doesn't recommend using our W-7006 foam cutting pad to apply chemicals, (usually paint cleaners or cleaner/polishes of some type), because in most cases it's going to remove the defects and make the paint shiny but under close examination under the right lighting conditions you're going to see scouring and micro-marring as our W-7006 foam cutting pad uses a very aggressive foam formula.

Keep in mind we designed this pad primarily to be used as a replacement for a wool cutting pad in a body shop environment with an aggressive compound to remove wet-sanding marks. The idea we're trying to get across and the practical experience we let you feel when you attend one of our Saturday classes is that this foam has a sharpness to it as well as being very stiff.

Just to note... First hand experience... been there... done that...

This foam pad will scour the paint in most cases when used with a dual action polisher on the higher settings and especially on the 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0 settings and even especially more when used with an aggressive product like the Poorboys swirl remover.

                Re: Explain this ...!

In my opinion it makes no sense to use a PC where it is clearly evident that a rotary is in order...I see it as a complete waste of time...
