  • Buying a Porter Cable... need help!

    Hey guys,

I have decided that I am going to buy a Porter Cable. I am not to this detailing stuff, and I have never used a PC before. However, I know that they're pretty safe to use, and the results from them are superior. So, here is my question. Exactly WHICH PC do I want, and which pads do I want? Remember that I don't know anything about this, so if someone could help me, that would be great. Does anyone have any good suggestions on where to buy it from? Also, which pads would I want for applying wax? Also, which size backing plate would I want? I am not even sure what that does, but any advice would be great.

    Thanks much,
    Jeff

    Hello,

Your going to want to get the Meguiar's PC as it comes with a lifetime warranty and there is a kit that comes with the Backing Plate and one W-8006 Pad. I highly recomend that you get it from autodetailingsolutionsdotcom. They have the same kit, for a very low price of $149.99. For applying wax your going to want a W-9006 Pad, and for removing defects your going to want W-8006 Pads.

Read through these articles to help you out a little more, and feel free to ask questions!!

    Hope this helps a little!!

The 7336 or 7424 are virtually identical. Either will do. You will need a flexible backing plate and a few pads. I'd start with three polishing pads and three finishing pads. If you plan on using the PC to remove your wax you should buy a few buffing bonnets also. I use these bonnets over a cutting pad but they will work just as well over a polishing pad. You probably should buy some #80 and #83 polish too.

For some odd reason the whole post didn't get posted the first time and I couldn't edit that message.

Will Meguiars W64DA backing plate fit the porter cable 7336 and 7424? If not what backing plate should be purchased in order to use Meguiars pads?
            Thanks

Thanks for that jfelbab . I've been meaning to get an orbital buffer for a while now. I've seen some good packages for meguiars g100a, but sadly they dont deliver to the UK. Plus I find that the porter cable 7336 and 7424 are easier to get hold of. Guess I will go for either the 7336 or the 7424, and get the W64DA backing plate. I wouldn't need a new counter weight would I?

No, either size counterweight works pretty well in my experience.

Thanks again. I've found a source for the porter cable 7424 priced at $99 which seems to be a very good price. I live in the UK and want to make sure I am dealing with the very best overseas suppliers. Has anyone dealt with tools-plus.com? Anyone got any recommendations?

In the long run you will be glad you did.

Yeah, I looked at them already, and they had some very nice offers. However, they do not ship international orders outside of the US. I would have to inconvenience a friend/family member living in the US if I want to order from them.

Hey, I just want to let you know that last week I ordered the 7424 from tools-plus as well. The UPS tracking is showing 5/3 delivery. So, if you can wait until then, I'll let you know by next Saturday how it is (hopefully smooth sailing).
Someone said it on MOL: I'll detail my car this weekend... wife permitting.
