  • What is this plastic like stuff?

As you can see, there is a raised surface near the wheel. It feels almost like a plastic. First, What is it? Second, How do i detail it?

I think that it a a protective clear tape to prevent rock chips. Probably put on there by the previous owner.

Is that pink line the edge of it? Is it behind the wheel?

That should be a better look. And the vehicle had no previous owner.

It looks like that stone protector kind of stuff, but it looks like it is on the leading edge of the wheelwell, not the back ege?

I think it's put there from the factory. My high dollar '97 Kia Sephia had the same strip in the same place, it did start to come up and chip away after a while.

            Hope that helps.

My dads 88 Ford Ranger had the same thing.. Has nothing to do with the price of the vehicle.. Its just there to protect the paint from chips..

Both of my cts's had that applied. Staight from the factory. I Just treated it like a painted surface and I had no problems with it. It was on a sandstone and platinum, not black. Maybe thats why it wasn't noticeable.

Is it on any other part of the car? I just posted about this stuff like 2 seconds ago. 3M makes something like this and its a stone guard like someone said. The reason I ask if its anywhere else, is because usually there are differnt packages of this stuff. You can get just the hood done, or you can do every part of the car that flares out where it can be hit by rocks. If you look at your hood, it should be right at the front, going back about 3 to 4 inches towards the hood.

Also, you can check out 3Ms site to see if there is any suggest way to clean it.

No, it is only on the rear driverside door and the rear passenger door.

Re: What is this plastic like stuff?

MY guess is that the person who owned it before had the entire front end protected with the stone guard and took it off before selling it and just forgot the door peices.

It would be odd to only put it in those two places.

I don't think there was any previous owner.

I work at a car wash and I see this stuff on so many cars, The most I have seen of it was on a front of a sports coupe with the whole front bumper and front part of the hood was coverd with it. I was suprised to see a whole bumper coverd with it.

It's put on areas which are prone to stone chips, some cars are more prone to stone chips around the wheels which is why they put it there.
