  • Paint Chip?

I just bought a 2007 Dodge Ram in January and the other day I was washing it and discovered what look like a small paint chip on the side of the door. I felt around it and it seems that the chip is underneath the paint or clear coat cause it felt smooth not jagged like a paint chip would feel. Keep in mind I wash my truck regularly and I would have noticed it. Has anyone heard of this is it possible. Thanks, Ray

    Could you get a picture?

I have no idea what it could be. Does it look like this?

      Hi Ray,

You may want to use some kind of magnifying glass to get a closer inspection. This will allow you to see if it is a chip, or if it coming up from underneath ? We use these all the time, and it will certainly reaveal the truth

In the meantime, as sneek said...a picture would help us see what your referring to

I took this picture and it was real hard to get a good one because of the glare and because the truck is red. That little dot is what I am talking about and you can see the glare of the lawn there too.

            Re: Paint Chip?

If it's under the clear coat there's not a lot you can do. Doing something to the area would only affect the surface of the clear paint and not address the underlying problem.

Things like wet-sanding will only be topical, that is they will only affect the upper most surface of the finish, so in the end trying something like this my just open another can of worms.

If the defect is under the clear, then you need to choose between having the area repainted or living with the defect.

If you were close by we would be happy to take a look at it and even run the rotary buffer over it but again, this would be just to confirm that either it could be fixed, (it's a topical defect), or it's under the clear and the only honest options would be to repaint or live with it.
