Kerosene for car wash!?!?!!???

Have you ever heard of using kerosene as additive for your car wash soap?My friend used this method to wash his car. he said mix 100cc kerosene to water and car wash soap (cheap one) and he said the result were good.. and said he doesnt need to polish his car

in long term,does kerosene will have bad effect for paint or clear coat?

ER... YES I WOULD THINK SO; A LITTLE LIKE PUTING GAS ON YOUR CAR; I WOULD STICK TO THE PROPER CAR WASH SOAP. MYSELF I LIKE NXT OR GOLD CLASS; BOTH GREAT PRODUCTS. JUST MY 2 CENTS WORTH.

I knew an old codger who owned and ran a limo service and that is what he used on his limos. He claimed that it shines as good as any wax, water beads as good as any wax and that it would get into the tiniest crevices to protect better than wax. His limo's looked awesome. I never tested his theory myself but his vehicles were stunning, no swirls, no rust and glossy as all hell.

Worked as a Roughneck on a Oil Drilling Rig one time and we added kerosene to all our wash water for maintaining all the mud pumps on the drilling site. Kept them clean and shiny and seem to help keep everything from rusting. Also made cleaning off mud from gasket blowouts off the pumps fast so you could take the pump apart and install a new gasket. (Had to be able to see what you're doing).

In case you didn't know, when you're drilling you use a pre-mixed mud as a lubricant for the drill bit and pump the stuff continually down the shaft of the drill tubes. So you make a lot of mud, the stuff comes in 50 pound bags by the truck load and one of the jobs on a drill site is to simply cut the bags open and add fresh mud mix to water to maintain a mud supply.


Don't know if it will hurt anything when mixed with water and then rinsed off your car but remember you car is made with a lot of different materials besides just the clear coat paint. Meguiar's would never recommend this procedure and instead would recommend using a car wash formulated specifically for car washing.

My father-in-law was a chauffeur for the Guggenheim family. He has told me many stories of hanging out with the chauffeurs of other wealthy families. He said many of the drivers would dip a cotton cloth rag into kerosene to wipe down the limos while they waited. He swears it made the cars, most of which were black lacquer, look gorgeous. I'm not sure how it would react with the more complex paint chemistry used on today's cars.

Single stage lacquer is a completely different than a modern clear coat, it's a lot more porous too and this enables products to penetrate into it and if it's the right product it will look great when you're done.

This car had a single stage black lacquer finish.




At this point, don't think we would put any kerosene on the paint.

So this method (myth maybe) approved or busted?hehehe.. anyone knows side effect off using this method?for mine,i'll never do this method. what i know kerosene have the same function to remove tar. is it right?

Ah, but therein lies the rub. Shine is one thing, but protection is something else. We all know that a product like #7 Show Car Glaze is a proven product, designed specifically for car finishes, that adds great beauty and depth to the color. But it doesn't protect worth a darn and washes off pretty easily.

Shine and protection do not necessarily go hand in hand.

The use of Kerosene for cleaning lots of thing, including cars is something that has been around for years.
An uncle of mine did just what your friend suggested, add some kerosene to the wash water. I'm sure he didn't bother to measure. His vehicles always looked good, but I personally think it is not a good idea.

The only time I have use kerosene on a vehicle was when I got into a freshly resurfaced road that absolutely coated the lower portions of an Astro van. I washed those areas with straight kerosene to remove the tar/oil, then rewashed the whole vehicle with a car wash soap. I also rewaxed the areas where I had used the kerosene. I thought the kerosene had not been kind to the wax that was on there previously.

I use Kerosene when I got camping to light my lamps. IMO if its used as a fuel, not for putting on the car.

I could imagine people with their older Ford Taurus FFV's pulling up to the Kerosene pump and just shooting it all over the car, lolololol

I have heard of it. It is old school. Some waterless carwashes I have found have it in there. I will not mention the name. If you want PM me.

I would never do this though. It makes about as much sense as washing your car with Dawn.

I have not done the kerosene either. Now the Pledge I have read in a detail book for a concours event.
Who knows what happens to your paint.
I'll just stick to the GC wash

I've never heard of this before, but after thinking about it and reading some of your posts, perhaps there is something there. I might consider it if I had lots of bugs or tar to remove, but I would feel a lot better if I followed that with a serious wash using just the car wash and then finishing with the clay and wax. That's just my thoughts though, no experience or research to back them up.

Kerosene will not hurt paint_clear coat or single stage. It is in most tar removers. It and especially mineral spirits are in most car waxes.The thing with the kerosene wash was to put 1 cup of kerosene in a bucket of water , and wash your car with it. It was used like QEW. It would keep road film from forming on the paint, therefore keep it shinny. The kerosene would flow behind mouldings and prevent rust. Back in its day it worked great , but by removing road film it would also remove wax.
