  • safest and best way to remove old wax?(PLEASE READ MIKE)

I use to use dc1 to prep my paint for polishing and waxing, but ever since i found out it had abrasives in it i will not be using it every month like i use to. I heard clay is good but i wanted to know if there were other ways. What is the safest and best way to remove old wax, and prep the surface for polishing and waxing THAT I CAN SAFELY USE EVERY MONTH.

Re: safest and best way to remove old wax?

DC1 has such mild abrasives that I don't believe it's going to harm anything using it once a month, especially if it is applied by hand. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that was always what I understood. I've read on here before that people use #9 by machine once a month for touch up, which will be more aggresive than DC1 by hand.

The mildest way to remove wax is clay + DC#1....

Maybe I've been missing something, but in 30 years of keeping my cars clean, I've never seen the need to remove old wax. Paint cleaner (i.e.: #1) sand polish seem to work just fine in preparation for the new wax.

I'm curious...if after a month, you've still got wax on your car, presumably it's still protecting the shine underneath (which is what wax does, right?). If so, why do you feel a need to strip it off? Why not a wash, clay and re-wax? I think even in this forum, some people would feel that a full detail 12 times a year might be just a bit excessive. (Maybe I'm just jealous that you've got the time to do that .)

Even if there is wax still on there does it really matter seeing as your putting on a new layer.

I think you are getting the wrong impression of 'abrasives' the abrasives are very specialized (we are not talking sand in a bottle), Meguiars sells DC#1 in the consumer line product forsale to anyone who with every level of experience and its easy enough for anyone to use on any automotive paint time and time again.... there is no worries with using this product over and over.

my car has a German clear coat on it, its very very soft compared to most usa clear coats. I might be great for usa clear coats but for my clear coat it is too aggressive to use every month. I dont know about you guys but i want my clear coat to stick around.

DC1 has "Diminishing" abrasives in it, please include this word so you don't give people the wrong idea.

                Thank you.

                  How do you know?

How do you rate softness and hardness? How many cars have you worked on to base your statements?

                    Are German clear coats "soft"?
Yes, they are. At least, softer than U.S. clear coats. In the U.S. there are three major paint suppliers to the automakers. PPG (#1), Dupont (#2), and BASF (a distant third). Both PPG and Dupont have focused on creating super-hard clear coats. These "rigid" clears are more resistant to chemical etching which makes them less susceptible to acid rain spots and owner induced swirls from washing and drying improperly. The disadvantage of rigid clears is their susceptibility to chip when struck by stones or road debris.
Perhaps because of the Autobahn and Germany's higher speed limits, German automakers have settled on a less rigid, or more elastic, clear coat. German clear coats are less likely to chip when impacted by road debris but are more susceptible to swirls if treated improperly.

Well we don't teach that here on this forum, we teach people that it's foolish to make blanket statements like you have done. We teach people that they really don't know if the paint on their car is hard or soft until they go out into thier garage and work on it themsleves.

Don't believe everything you read on a forum. It's not always true.

So how important is it to remove "old" wax?

It's kind of funny, in the hold days people would worry about a 'wax build-up'

Now days, people call it "Layering"

If your car is a daily driver then the wax or sealant is wearing off on it's own, but if you want to make sure you have the best looking paint possible and you've been applying wax for a while the simply use a paint cleaner like ScratchX or DC! to remove any existing wax, this will restore a fresh base to start from.

The act of washing your car is more damaging to your vehicles clear coat than a paint cleaner such as DC#1, but thats just my opinion. Just think you are rubbing dirt/fine sand particles all over your vehicle, sure we try our best not to do this by using the proper tools and products but to some extent its going to happen.

So, I go back to my earlier post in this thread the product is intended to be used by anyone on any vehicle, there in no list on the bottle that excludes vehicles by certain manufactures. I am not trying to change your mind on this just trying explain how 'safe' the product really is and you or anyone else should have no worries.
