  • rust particles on paint surface

I have a 2002 Silverado which has rust particles coating the whole right side. These particles came from the right rotor and have bonded firmly to the clear coat. I have tried washing followed by a cleaner, but I can not get them off as easily as I thought I would. The cleaning rags come away coated with rust, but a lot of the particles still remain on the paint surface. I dont want to try a very abrasive cleaner because of the clear coat. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to remove these particles easily, or is it a matter of continuing to wash followed by a cleaning compound until they eventually disappear?

Clay bar sounds like the tool you need - just what the doctor ordered for bonded surface contaminants. Pick up the Meguiar's Quik Clay kit at your friendly neighborhood autoparts store and you'll have everything you need.

Just wash the car normally first, grab a piece of clay (should be two of them in the little plastic soap dish) and kneed it into a flat pancake that fits in the palm of your hand, then spray a liberal amount of quick detail onto a panel and start rubbing the clay over the paint - you don't much pressure at all. You'll feel it start to glide as it picks off the bonded junk. Every so often fold the clay over and reform it into a little pancake. Just keep the area nice and lubricated with the QD spray while you work. As finish a roughly 2' x 2' area wipe it clean with the microfiber towel and continue on.

Very important tips: should you drop the clay on the ground, throw it away immediately. Don't even think about letting it touch your paint again. That's why Meguiar's puts two small pieces of clay in their kit rather than one large one. In the event you can't find the Meguiar's clay kit and choose another brand (nothing wrong with that, by the way ) just make sure you tear the clay bar in half so that if you do drop it you still have some to work with. You will need to wax your car after claying as the clay process will remove your wax.

I agree, but you may have to look for the Smooth Surface Clay Kit (I would guess thats what Mike-in-orange meant), I believe the Quik Clay kit has been discontinued but you may still find it around.

I've experienced this when doing a quick cleaning of a white, 2001 Ford F150. Unfortunately, I found that these rust particles (from the brakes as you mentioned) were difficult to remove and didn't disappear with clay or even when I tried some products with the PC. Maybe I'd have better luck using the machine now that I have more experience. But back then I had success hand applying ColourX with a towel so that I could apply enough pressure to get rid of the crud.
