Scratch-X: How much "passion"?

I recently purchased Scratch-X for a few light scratches on my hood. I've used it a few times, with little results. The scratches are not deep, and after reading these forums, I'm sure should come out with the right amount of work.

My question is, how much "passion" should I use? (how long should I rub it in per session?....how many times should I repeat?) Basically I want to know the difference between not doing enough, or doing too much.

A pretty good amount.

I would describe it like this:

Apply the product to your foam pad, under your fingers.

Wipe the product around a 8" x8" or so square, or appropriate shape, so you have an even coating of white cream.

Start working the product in with a good bit of passion, back and forth is probably the easiest direction, pushing down through your fingers. I guess I would call the pressure a little short of bending the metal, but not gentle.

As product builds up around the edges of your work area, sweep/gather it back into your work area with the pad.

Go until the product turns greasy clear, then wipe off and inspect.

don't get discouraged if it takes a few passes.

work it in as stated and just inspect and go at it again until you're happy with results.

This question helps me as well, but I have another question too. The spots I want to work are nowhere near 8X8. The are more like .75X.25. Someone suggested in another thread to use at least an amount the size of a 50 cent piece. That would cover the entire area I am looking at with room to spare. Should I still start with that much Scratch X?

Well, you have to be able to rub your pad back and forth, and have that area covered with product.

You may not need as much as for 8x8, but if you use too little, you will either not be able to rub your hand back and forth effectively, or you will be rubbing the pad dry on the paint.

I would imagine 1x1 or a little larger is the smallest area one could work in, so you just need enough product to be able to smear a layer over that area.

And keep in mind, as you work, you will push excess product to the eges, so that will need wiped back into your work area and broken down as well.

Yea I can chime in here with "passion". I had a few light scratches on my Tahoe that my Lab had made. She jumped up and made these disgusting 6 inch long claw marks. I was horrified. Luckily, I couldn't feel them with my fingernail so I knew I had a fighting chance. Here was my procedure:

-Used Meguiars foam applicator pad
-applied silver-dollar sized glob on pad
-extended my arm until I felt my elbow lock and I rubbed the product in furiously. I imagined I was trying to scrub the paint off my door.
- I re-applied another silver-dollar sized glob and repeated my application procedure 3 more times. (Yea it may be overboard but I did not want to have to come back a few days later and try this again to see if I could get better results).

The entire process took 5 minutes. After the third application, I grabbed a clean MF towel and wiped off all the residual cream. There was alot of it left but I read somewhere that Scratch-X has diminishing abrasives so thats why I kept applying. Anyway, all the scratches were GONE!!! I even waited for the sun to go down and I grabbed my flourescent camp light. There wasn't a trace.

I'm a total newbie when it comes to this stuff. Just wondering, after applying the scratch x to a specific area of the car, will it change the colour by any chance (i.e. make the colour lighter/darker)?

Technicaly, no.

However, if the car is heavily swirled. or oxidized, etc, and ScratchX restores the surface, then yes, the repaired spot would look different.

Getting the hazing off of a clearcoat can make the base color look richer, deeper.

But it isnt actualy changing the car color, just making the color look like it is supposed to.

I see...

so would it be ideal to put the scratchx on all parts of the car, even though only one section of it has a problem? I wouldn't want just that one repaired section to look nicer than the rest of the car lol

Well, if the rest of your car is in good shape, then just using a mild cleaner like Deep Crystal #1, a pure polish like DC#2, and wax would make the rest of the car look like they are supposed to.

Whatever paint someone is working on only has a certain potential for gloss, depth, richness, etc. You can only bring everything up to 100%, so even if one section of your car is 70%, and the rest is 95%, all you can do is reach the 100%. Just that the rest of the car can use milder products, less work, etc to get there than the 70% part.

I hope that helps, or it may have confused you more, but hopefully you get the idea.

Where does Scratch-X fall in the abrasiveness scale I have seen on the various containers of products in the Professional line?

Also, how is it used with the G-100?
