  • Chrome trim on brand new car

For a brand new car, what is the best product to use for chrome trim? I have heard many different opinions:

1 - use nothing - just wash and dry
2 - use paint wax (eg NXT Tech Wax)
    3 - dont wax it
4 - use NXT All Metal Polysh
5 - dont use NXT All Metal Polysh as it meant for chrome wheels
6 - use caution if the trim is simply chrome over plastic - some product make it worse

I have a new G35. Lots of 'hard' chrome over the doors ' but very 'soft' chrome (ie over plastic) on the grill.

    Leaning towards Option 2 !

    Many thanks.

Wax would be fine for it.

Whether it's chrome plating over metal or Vacuum metalizing onto plastic, (plastic chrome), both coatings should be treated carefully. For chrome plated metal wheels and components, the worst enemy for is dirt build-up with moisture as this will eventually cause deterioration of the chrome and this will lead to rust. This is usually not an issue for chromed plastic.

The best thing to do is to wash these components with a high lubricity soap, (just like paint), to keep them clean and then apply a coating of a quality wax to help prevent dirt and other contaminants from sticking to the surface. A quality wax will also help to remove any light mineral stains that can be deposited from your wash water.

Avoid abrasive products when working on chrome.
