  • Clay vs.Polish

OK, clay is an abrassive. It does not "lift" contaminants off the surface of paint. It "sands" them off. Clay works. I don't doubt that at all. But if you have a lot off "junk" on the paint's surface wouldn't it be removed more easily with a good polish #80 or #83 and a pc or rotary buffer?

Another question. Because clay "sands off" the contaminants what do you do with particles that are actually imbedded in the paint surface, ie. rail dust filings or manufacturing pollutants?

I think you have it the other way around. Clay lifts particles off paint, at least thats what Ive been told. #80 and #83 are actually cleaners that have just a bit of polishing oils in them. These would remove paint kinda like sanding.

Clay is used properly won't damage your paint.

with some outside reading i got some info for you.

Clay is an abrasive paint care system. Yet used properly, detailing clay is not abrasive to your car

An easy way to think about detailcing clay is that detailing clay is a selective polish with a built in applicator. its job is to POLISH AWAY dirt and surface contamination from your cars paint (ie. brake dust, overspray, etc...) glass, chrome and plastic WITHOUT polishing the surface itself.
            • Detailing clay works by hyrdoplaning (floating) over the surface you're cleaning on a thin layer of clay lubricant (QD or some use water)
            • When the clay encounter surfaces contamination it abrasively grinds it away
            • Detailing clay shears off any foreign material above the level surface of paint.
            • If used properly is 100 safe
            • Always use plenty of lubricant

            hope that helps.

products like M80 and M83 will remove swirls but if your paint's finish isn't properly cleaned you're just taking away from the potential to have it shine and can possibly embed scratches if you have contaminants on your paint's finish that you haven't throughly cleaned off.
