  • Deep Scratch

After cleaning my black car, I noticed a deep scratch, which seems to be through the clear coat and black paint, so the gray primer is showing. Based on my reading, I would have to remove much of the clear coat and paint, to level this out. I really don't want to attempt anything fancy.
Anyone have experience with those small dealer paint tubes that have what looks like a ball point pen at the tip? The scratch is about 2 inches long, and while I probably would be the only person who would ever notice it, I know it is there. Thanks.

You do not need to remove the clear around the scratch.

To repair the scratch, you need to find the finest tipped paint brush at an art store. Use that instead of the roller to fill in the scratch. Afterwards, wet sand the area to level out the paint. Follow this up with some compounding, polishing, and then waxing.

      Re: Deep Scratch

If that much paint is missing it may require touch up paint. The biggest challenges with touch up paint are matching the exact color and then sanding/buffing the area to blend it in. This can require some professional equipment and expertise. Depending on the severity of the issue and your determination level for a flawless finish you may want to have a professional take a look.

Be wary of "miracle" products that will only temporarily mask the problem.

        Re: Deep Scratch

Thanks for the replies. This car is a new daily driver, and while I really try to take good care of my cars and paint, I am not sure I want (or need to) get into professional repair of the scratch, or rub the clear coat down, paint and sand, etc. (I do appreciate your replies) Also, I am not sure matching the paint is an issue, as it is black. That said, I remember trying to get paint for my white TR-7 and never knew there were so many whites. I was younger then and a lot more critical. Now on this new car, this is a scratch that looks like this ________. No picture, just the line. Think I will try the thin brush, rather than this ball point thing, and that should do it. If anyone is that close to my back wheel to notice a flaw, I will be in worse trouble, as I will have probably ran over them and they are looking up.
