    Hey..
What is the difference between the clay in the "Smooth surface" pack, and this one: http://www.meguiars.com/?pro-auto-de...ling-Clay-Mild

I never clayed before, so I wonder...
and also, forgot to order quik detailer, can i use "Meguiars Gold Class Spray detailer G-13724"? Or do I need to get hands on some Quik or Final Inspection?

    Re: Clay difference

The difference is the aggressiveness of the clay. So if it would take you 2 passes to remove something with mild clay, it might take 5 to remove it with the smooth surface clay.

As for the lube, I am not sure about the Gold Class. But if you can not find or get any Quik Detailer, Final Inspection or Last Touch... Soapy water works too. But be warned that it breaks down the clay after time. I used it a few times with my clay and didnt notice anything, but just wanted to inform you.

      Re: Clay difference

the smooth surface clay kit is a consumer line.

the one you have linked to is the professional line.

what is the main difference. well, they are both mild aggressiveness. only the Red Clay is the really aggressive one.

the main difference is that the Pro Line clay comes in a tub by itself and it very big in comparison to the one you get in the Smooth Surface kit. however, the Smooth Surface kit comes with a Microfibre in each kit.

can you not get a QD at your local shop or no?

if not yes you can use that one. will work just fine. you can use it to clay it'll provide he lubrication needed and in between washes.

remember if you don't have the proper lubricate you can always just use water. some people use soap and water.

TrufflePig is absolutely right. Really it just comes down to packaging, price, and your personal preference. The only really different Clay is the Aggressive Clay in the Pro Line which Meguiar's would not recommend unless you are a professional with the option to use a high speed rotary buffer after claying.

          Thanks guys.
So it mostly comes down to the size of the clay, that is good since i am planning on claying EVERYTHING.
As for lubrication, I might have to use the nxt or water.. hard to get Meg products here, that is why i order from autogeek.net! pity i always forget what i REALLY need instead of the "cool new stuff"...

            Re: Clay difference

yes but the clay in the Smooth Surface kit is big enough to do the job.

remember yo usually cut it half and use half at a time.

Here is a good quote from a while back...

              Blue Clay: 6 passes

              Red Clay: 3 passes

What makes those products for professionals only is because they are so aggressive they can potentially put light scratches in your finish. Professionals will use them prior to going in and wet sanding or using a rotary buffer to work on the vehicle. If you only plan on doing light cleaning and polishing then be aware that those may put some light swirl in and are for finnishes that are in bad shape.

That is too bad, now i dont know if i eill dare to put it on my paint..
Got the wrong clay and i dont have qd...

But since the paint is getting machine polishing afterwards, it should be "safe", right?

                  Re: Clay difference

What Clay did you purchase? If you purchased the Smooth Surface Clay Kit or the Professional Detailing Clay (Mild) you should have no concerns about damage. Assuming you use an appropriate lubricant you should have no fear of claying. Quik Detailer, Final Inspection, Speed Detailer, and Last Touch are all good lubricants.

All you can do is try a small area. I think the warning about scratching the finish is for really soft clear and for the red clay. If I was you I would cut the bar into a few smaller pieces. Then use soapy water as a lube.

sounds like you bough the Blue Clay.

mate, you should have no worries. its still a mild clay. just keep the car and the clay well lubricated and you'll be okay.

don't be scared though. as long as its lubricated it can't/won't drag and it'll be doing its job.

                        Re: Clay difference

When your done with it put it in a ziplock bag and spray a little of the detailer spray in there. This will keep your clay soft and keep it from becoming brittle.

                          Re: Clay difference

so what i have learned from this tread:

The blue proffesional clay is slightly more agressive than Smooth Surface clay, but not as agressive as the red one. I wont need as many passes as with SS

The NXT speed detailer (or pure water) will be just fine for lubrication, all though I should have had Quik Detailer

After i am done I put the clay in a plastic bag moist with NXT SD inside the box

I will use a plastic bag before, while and after claying to determine how smooth the surface is

                          ?

So either the Smooth Surface or Detailing Clay Mild will work very well? Just the Mild Clay will take less passes, correct?

i preface this with the fact that im a newbie...

What do you need the supreme shine microfiber towel for, with clay? I thought once it's washed (and dried?) you use quick detailer and clay it. Do you need to wash it/dry it again afterwards? isnt that what the supreme shine is for?
