  • Beginner on Trans Am

Hello! I have been using Meguiar's products for as long as I have been buying cars! Love the look of the after effects. I have a 2000 Trans am that is pictured and I show the car a lot. Because this is a daily driver with 145k on the clock, the paint is showing some light swirls. I would like to get a rotory, but I really dont want to mess up my paint.

My question is, what is the likely hood of me screwing up my paint if I use a rotory with #80 and NXT? I have a big show to go to in May and I really don's want to do anything wrong. I have been doing the following:
    1. Wash
    2. Clay
    3. Gold Class
    4. 2 coats of NXT

If you have never used one before, the likelyhood is fairly high.

The much better choice would be a G-100. Check out autodetailingsolutions.com for some prices, pads, kits, etc.

Even for a quick detail by hand for now, you could work in something like ColorX topped with Nxt, to at least use a bit of a cleaner. I notice you havent been using one at all, so that could help a bit for the moment.

Well, I have been there several times and I did not find it on that site. Where is it located?

Onthe left side of the web site it says da polisher promotions. You can buy it a la carte or in a package with other items.

The full product name would be G-100 Dual Action Polisher. Also called a DA Polisher, or a PC as it is made by Porter Cable.

That's a great looking WS6 you have there! I had a black '01, which was my favorite car to detail!

Your paint looks to be in very good condition. The #80along with the G100 will be more than sufficient to remove any spider webbing or swirls that you may have. Take a look at your paint out in the sun to see how bad your swirls are.

Don't start out using a rotary on your TA! It probably doesn't need it based on those pictures. Before you use a rotary, it would be best to practice first on a beater or a body panel from a salvage yard.

I would skip the GC and apply a coat of #81 after the #80. That will give you a little more depth. If you are going to use NXT I would go with the paste. It dries more quickly and does not streak upon wipe-off. You may also want to try Meguiar's #21 from the professional line. It is more durable and looks just about as good as the NXT.

I find that the RA fiberglass hood swirls easily. It was painted by ASC not GM and I suspect the clearcoat is softer. When you wash the car, rinse with a flow of water not a strong stream. And blot the hood when drying it off instead of wiping. A Water Magnet towel will work very well and is less likely to leave swirls.

For the car show, get yourself a body duster like the California Car Duster or the OXO duster. It will not cause swirls if used with a light touch. Get some NXT Speed Detailer to remove the remaining dust and any other contaminants. It will add slickness and restore gloss and protection which is just what you want for the show! That would be the ideal combination to maintain your TA's finish at the car show.

Some Hot Shine Gel for the tires would look nice too!

                  Long live the WS6!!!!!!!
