  • Is this too far gone?

    Hi all,

I just purchased this 1991 Taurus SHO, and want to try to save the paint before aving to settle on another repaint. The car was painted since new (when I don't know) and I don't know if it was clearcoated or not, I do not think so though.

The trunk, and roof of the car are pretty badly hurt, and the hood is the worst of the lot. (Pics are below) The paint is still solid, and since repainted, should have plenty to work with.

I plan on using my rotary with a W4000 cutting pad with some #83, followed by a W8000 foam with #3 Machine glaze afterwards.

    1. Is the paint too far gone, do you think?
    2. Do I plan on using the right products,
    3. Should I try something else?

Thanks for looking... Here are some pictures:

    The roof (no flash)

    The trunk (no flash)

    The trunk (with flash)

    The hood (with flash)

Hood (close with flash) you can see the slight webbing in the paint (is this salvagable?)

Thanks for looking, and thanks for your help!

:P I don't think the car is clearcoated, even though I think it should be. We used to have a 1990 Taurus..my first car I had it for 2 weeks, and then we sold it.

Getting back to the topic, why don't you try a tiny test spot by hand using what you have. Maybe try #83 by hand with a terry cloth towel, if the applicator turns red then it is single stage. Also you should see some sort of improvement even though #83 won't fully break down by hand.

Also are you experienced with a rotary, because you could do a whole lot of damage if you mess up.

    Cheers

It looks very similar to the Mercedes' extreme makeover thread, so it may not be too far gone, but it could be a lot of work.

Looks like a single stage paint to me but test spot will provide you with all the answers.

richard restored a red mustang in bad condition with rotary too. it was single stage. you should look at that.

SS Red always oxidizes like that. You should be able to bring it back pretty well. I did an '89 Sable with G-100/burgundy cutting pad/83 and it came out pretty well. Since it's your car and a SHO I'd go to 80 or 82 before the #3.

Re: Is this too far gone?

Thought I'd update the thread, I hit the horizontal surfaces today with the PC and #83. Pulled out a lot of ****, but this paint is thrashed pretty good. It'll take some work.

However, I'm pretty pleased so far considering this is only the first step in a long journey, I'm genuinely excited now!

I think for a first application, it's impressive for Meg's considering what we started with!

                  Thanks for everyone's help!

Come on! I've got 12" of snow outside right now... It hit 35 degrees long enough to wash the car, and voila...

Helps to have a garage though...

NICE work! Any swirls or holograms left to polish off with a PC? How long did it take?
