  • Detailing starts with a good washing

I know that a good detailing starts with a good was but even a two bucket system can scratch the finish with the grit that doesn’t get fully rinsed. Yesterday at lunch I had to run some errands and while walking to the car I noticed a lot of swirl on one of my quarter panels which I suspect come mostly from my weekly washings.

I know to get rid of it I know that I need to polish but what can I do to prevent future outbreaks. Is there a home ‘touchless’ car wash, or would using a foam gun reduce the amount of contact with the finish which should reduce the chance of swirl from a wash.

Any Ideas on what to do, and would pictures help ?

Over time (after a fresh detail) I notice very fine scratches appearing in my vehicle paint in the direction I use my wash mitt. I use Gold Class soap, the two bucket method, rinse the mitt often and use the softest sheep skin mitts I can find, still there are the scratches. Not sure you can totally eliminate these scratches but you can do your best to minimize them.

One thing I also do... I have am luck enough to have a power washer and if there is lots of road grime on the vehicle I will first rinse with a power washer. Now I know thats not possible for everyone to do this pre-rinse.

I have never used a foam gun I know some on MOL have one but you will still have to drag your wash mitt across the surface of the vehicle.

Another idea, what are you using to dry?

exactly. anytime you have contact with touching the paint, no matter how careful you are, there is the potential. all we can do is minimize it as much as possible, as paul aka theotherpc has stated many times...

I have recently purchased a foam gun and 2 boars hair brushes. Now its winter here and I know that my paint is slightly swirled mainly because I was desperate one time and had to use the brush at a coin op car wash but the boars hair is the absolute best rinsing wash tool I have ever used. Especially using a rinse bucket and holding the gun with one hand and the brush in other shoot the soap right into the brush as you wash the panel. Its Fun looks cool and I believe I have introduced very little to no maring. But I cant be certain till I get to polish out the car again when the weather breaks. But I also have good success with onr/qew. Greg.
