Removing Oxidation

Hi all,

I have a Mk2 Golf GTI (1986) and its currently suffering from oxidisation. I came across this forum and have seen some superb work of you guys restoring some paintworks.

I found a thread http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...highlight=Golf concerning a Mk1 red golf similar to what i would like to attempt.

However, since i am new i couldnt understand some of the terminology...

The guy said he performed "85 with 7006, 83 with 8006 and 80 8006."

Im guess the numbers stated are product codes. the 7006 and 8006 bring up polishing pads on a product search? But i cannot confirm what products the 85, 83 and 80 are.

Also the restorer mentioned rotary and pc. What does PC stand for? If i attempt this is there a specific polishing machine or is there a minimum spec the machine should have to get decent results..

Any information/advice would be gratefully welcome...

• M85 is an aggressive cutting compound for use with a Rotary Buffer
• M83 is an aggressive cleaner/polish for use by hand, PC or Rotary Buffer
• M80 is a medium strength cleaner/polish for use by Hand, PC or Rotary Buffer

• W-7006 is a 6" foam cutting pad
• W-8006 is a 6" foam polishing pad
• W-9006 is a 6" foam finishing pad

• Your hand is, well your hand.
• A Rotary Buffer is a direct drive polisher with the ability to remove a lot of paint quickly
• A PC is the acronym used to describe a Dual Action Polisher manufactured by the Porter Cable company.

Have you ever used a rotary buffer before?
Do you own or have access to a PC?


If the answer to the above questions are "no", then you can remove the oxidation by hand and we can show you a couple of ways to do this.

Here's what the finish looks like after claying and wiping off, and before using ColorX.



First I did a test spot using a Meguiar's W-0004 foam wax applicator pad and achieved very good results.



Then, to give me a little more cleaning power, I tried another test spot in a different area using a small piece of 100% cotton terry cloth. Before applying the ColorX, I laid a piece of tape across the finish to more dramatically show the before and after results.

Cheers Mike,

Your posts clear things up, I have access to a rotary buffer but i am unsure of the quality and the calibre of the machine. It has only one speed setting and is made by the RAC ( this is a UK road-side recovery company).

My car is subject to quite a bit of oxidation so im sure a rotary buffer will be required, as i tried T-cutting long ago by hand with no results.

I will invest more time searching the posts and ensure i get the right products...
