  • How to polish paint by hand?

Hi guys, i recently did a paint prep by hand, which slightly dulled the surface, followed by a single application of Show Car Glaze #7 by hand and did not notice much difference to gloss until i applied a coat of wax. Is this normal when applying by hand?

    Thanks

    Kind of but it depends.

With the Meguiar's line of products, each step in a multi-step process should make the paint look better, that is if you start out with an ugly paint job, that is dull and scratched up and use one of our paint cleaners, compounds or cleaner/polishes on it, it should look a lot better when you're done.

Next if you re-polish it with a less aggressive product it should look even a little more better.

Next if you apply a pure polish it should start really looking good and after that when you seal your hard work with one of our premium waxes it should even look a little better.

    My questions would be
    • What are you working on?
    • What condition is/was the paint to start with?
    • What did you do for prep?
    • What chemical did you use?
    • How did you apply the chemical

Let's trouble shoot this from the beginning and we're sure we can see you through to success.

Ok my car is clear coated and is red. This paint is in a good condition depending on what angle you look at it. I started with Fine Cut Cleaner #2, then applied Show Car Glaze #7 followed by 1 application of Gold Class Wax. This was all done by hand applicator.

One other thing, since neither cleaner or polish gace any gloss, did you buff the products off after applying, before they dried? Or what did you buff with?

Take a moment to read the back label of the #2 and where it tells you how you can apply it look to see if it says Rotary Buffer Only, or if it states you can apply by Hand, DA Polisher or Rotary Buffer.

There was a formula change recently to enable this product to be applied by hand but there are still a lot of bottles of this out there that are the old formula that should only be applied using a rotary buffer.

          Let's investigate this first.

            Re: Show Car Glaze

It is actually diamond cut and can be used by hand. I apply a small section at a time and remove the excess before it dries, the same with the pure polish, buffing with a polishing cloth. I then gave it a coat of Gold class wax. Before applying a second coat of wax 12 hours later do i need to wash the car first or just get straight into it and once completing that second coat which spray would be the best choice to use to maintain it. One last thing how long is the gloss expected to last if the car is garaged and only driving on weekends providing it is not raining?

            Thanks

Is the paint that bad to warrant such an aggressive product? Did you try something less radical first, like scratch x, m80 or even m83?

Unfortunatly scratch x just doesnt do the required job. i will post some pics up later showing the final results.

You said it was #2 Fine Cut Cleaner in your second post?

Now you say it's Diamond Cut Compound?

You say it can be used by hand? Where did you learn this? It's not on the label, on the website or in the catalog?

Just to clear this up, Neither the M84 or the M85 compounds are formulated for or recommended for application by hand but are for use with a rotary buffer only.

At this point, we couldn't stand behind any results you're getting, this is the wrong product for the job. If you're working by hand, the the correct product would be ScratchX.

If ScratchX by hand isn't getting the job done, then we would recommend a product from our Professional Line applied by machine.

Application of the product sounds right, but not after appling M85 by hand.

The problem still lies at the first step, so we can't stand behind any results, or lack of results you're seeing.

As long as the car has been under cover and is not dirty you can apply the second coat of wax without washing. If the car has been driven or parked outside then you'll wan't to wash the car or wipe the car clean using a quick detailer before applying any more wax, the idea being not to take the chance or risk of applying wax to the paint when there may be dirt on the paint and possibly instill swirls or scratches into the paint.

For removing light dust, fingerprints and smudges, any of our quick detailers will work great.

For applying a quick coat of wax in-between normal washing and normal waxing you can use either of our spray-on waxes.

A long time assuming it's glossy when you're done with the waxing step.

By the way, what are you working on?

                    Re: Show Car Glaze

When i had my car detailed professionally they used diamond cut and i got a small bottle of it and asked it it can be used by hand and they told me yes. I have many hard to reach places such as the shape of my front spoiler so how would i go about buffing there? I applied a coat of quick wax but it seemed to leave behind a film after removing it.

                    Thanks pic later

Would you recommend using speed glaze before show car glaze instead of diamond cut.

What gets recommended depends upon what you're trying to do and how you're doing the work, by hand or machine, and if by machine, the type of machine.

Ok i want to get a show room shine and willing to spend time on it. Give me a step by step product list to get the best result please. I would also like to do it all by hand. The paint is in good condition but not the best.

                            Thanks
