  • hazy black paint after nxt

I just purchased a 07 black f150 and want to keep it looking new. I have always washed and waxed my other vehicles with turtle wax. I bought some megs nxt and waxed the f150 this past weekend, it looked hazy when I was finished. I called megs, they suggested I put on another coat of nxt. It helped but when a light shines on the paint at a certain angle it still looks hazy. Up until I joined this forum, I have never heard of claying or polishing a vehicle. I thought you just washed and waxed. Did I use too much wax or what? How do I fix the haze or will it fix itself.
    Help needed.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

Sorry to hear about your problem. I used NXT on my 2004 black F150 and never had a problem. Pictures would help. You shouldn't need clay or polish on a 2007. Do you have any quick detailer type spray? If so spray that on an area and wipe it off. See it that helps. Otherwise its hard to say with out seeing it. I'm sure some of the pros will jump in with some other ideas.

Did you apply very thin coats? What was the temp and humidity when you waxed? I've found that just a good washing can remove the haze if you apply it too thickly. Just wait 24 hours to let the wax fully set-up and bond before washing.

What did you use to wipe off the wax?

The first coat it was about 60 F and somewhat humid, the wax was hard to get off. The 2nd coat about 65 F and easy to get off. I just ordered some touch up detailing spray. I expected that when car lights shine on the paint that it would shine like a piece of glass. It looks hazy or oily. I may have applied to much wax, I thought alot was better, just hard to get off. I have been reading on the forum and learning. Thanks for the help.

            1st coat - cotton towel
            2nd coat - I bought a microfiber towel

It sounds like you either used too much or didn't let it sufficiently set up. Depending on the weather, it could take 20 minutes or longer to properly set up. Also, just because it is an '07 doesn't mean that it doesn't need claying or polished. Many new vehicles have plenty of bonded contaminants from sitting outside 24 hours a day. A quality polish can really make a new vehicle POP. I guess it just depends on what you are trying to accomplish, ie., just a good coat of wax or an amazing new vehicle that practically glows!
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Re: hazy black paint after nxt

We just bought a new 07 Magnum and i noticed the same thing after doing 2 coats of NXT. It was however about 30 F here even though we did have a heater in the garage. I think i didn't let it set long enough but after wiping it down good with a microfiber and then going through with the QD i was able to get it nice an shiny, no haze

Sounds like its not completely buffed out. Are you using the same towel to buff the entire vehicle? Maybe try using a second clean/fresh towel.

Re: hazy black paint after nxt

                      A couple of notes,

If you bought this brand new, do you know if the dealer applied any kind of a paint sealant to the paint before you took possession?

If you want to trouble shoot the problem, then here's what you do,

Starting with a clean truck, so you've washed it or wiped it clean using a quick detailer, take and map out a small section on the door or the hood, about a foot square. You want to be able to look down on the section so if the truck sits high you might want to choose the door and not the hood.

Now on this section, take and apply the NXT Tech Wax working the product onto the area gently but thoroughly. You should only be using about a teaspoon worth of product on your applicator pad. Make sure the applicator pad is clean.

Allow this thin coat of wax to fully dry before removing, see the Swipe Test as posted above.

After the wax has fully dried, carefully wipe the dried wax off using a clean, soft microfiber polishing cloth. Now inspect the results. The paint should be clear and dark, not hazy, cloudy or anything else.

Here's an example of a test spot we did on a car recently, it should give you an idea of how large a section to do and if you look at the photo where the wax has been removed you can see the square, taped-off section is dark and clear while the surrounding paint is hazy and more gray looking.

What you want to do is to see if you can make a small section look good and if you can then repeat the process that made the small section look good to the entire car. It's called, "Doing a Test Spot"

Test Spot on a Mosler to remove scratches and restore clarity to the clear coat.

After our choice of products were applied and wiped off to the test spot the Mosler was pulled out into the sun to inspect. The products and procedures selected worked in the test spot and then they were duplicated over the entire car.

Once you dial-in a successful procedure to one small area, all you have to do is repeat the procedure over the entire car. If you can make one small area look good, it's not a leap of faith to figure out you can make the entire car look good.

LSP applied (NXT in this case after machine cleaning and polishing)

                      LSP removed

The point is this, you need to get your system, (you, your hand, your applicator pad, your technique etc.,), dialed-in, in one small area before tackling the entire vehicle. The idea being you don't want to waste your time going over your entire truck till you're sure and confident that you can make one small area look good.

                      Does this make sense?

                        Follow-up...

If using just NXT and trying a test spot still doesn't work/meet your expectations, then the next step for troubleshooting will be to use a paint cleaner first, and then apply the NXT Tech Wax. This would look like this,
                        1. Wash truck or wipe clean with a quick detailer
                        2. Map out a small section to test on, (you can even tape this section off, like a taped off square area).
                        3. Apply and work in a paint cleaner like ScratchX. Apply ScratchX,work in and against the paint and then wipe off. No need to let a paint cleaner dry.
                        4. Apply NXT Tech Wax, allow to dry and then wipe-off and now inspect.

Let us know your results. NXT works great, it can just be matter of dialing in your system. Our job here is to see you through to success.

I used some megs quick detail spray this weekend and it cleared up the haze.
