  • Wax/Sealant Residue a week later

What causes residue to appear a week after application and (apparent) removal? Is it bad/old product or poor technique? I had lots of success using Meguiars products in my restoration business while I was in Maryland. I just moved back to Hawaii and decided to a different brand sealant. Initially, the car appeared nice and shiny. Did a twice-over to make sure all the sealant was removed. Then about a week later, however, there were areas on the car that looked like I never removed the sealant.

My bad for listening to the detailing supplier's salesman. I know I should stick with Meguiars, which is proven and true.

    Hi

    Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

Just to clarify, are you referring to sealant on the paint or on black trim?

If it's on the paint then it's likely you just didn't get it all the way wiped off, if it's on the trim then sometimes even though it appears to be off the trim after wiping the trim, later as the residue still remaining continues to dry it eventually shows up.

      Mike,

It's on the paint. We wiped the car down "real good" and checked it from all angles very carefully, and at the time, all surfaces were glossy. I'm puzzled as to why it'll appear as if it wasn't wiped off in spots after so many days. Would it take that long for it to get that white powdery appearance?

Related to that, is there a shelf life for wax/sealant products? I'm wondering if they sold me some stuff that they had sitting for a while.

Not sure what else could explain the results?

          A few questoins...

Can you wipe this residue off easily? (the residue that re-appeared)

Could be the paint needed to be cleaned first?

What color car is this you're working on? White or light color?

Does this car have a clear coat finish?

Have you contacted the product manufacture?

Hey melhawaii...I noticed you're in Ewa Beach...quite a ways from me, but maybe we can take a look at it one day. Does the "white powdery residue" come off? Also, where did you get your product from? (PM me the answer to that last question)

Sheesh, I can almost guess which sealant you're talking about, with the magically appearing residue. It doesn't have 3 letters and a dash, does it?

Residue does come off easily. Paint and clear coat were in good condition, i.e. no oxidation. Color of vehicle is light blue. Paint did not have to be cleaned. Haven't yet contacted the manufacturer.

If you want to insure every trace of this "other" sealant is removed, simply clean the paint by hand or machine, and then re-apply a sealant or wax you're familiar with and/or comfortable with.
