  • Need more abrasive power...

    Dear all,

My car has been recently detailed at a Megs Detail Center here in Indo. Overall, I'm pleased.I still have some deep swirls. The detailing guys said that they were too deep to remove.

Btw, my car is a daily driver

Anyways, I'm planning to do a monthly car care plan:
    1. Wash with Gold Class and Dry with SS and WM
    2. Quik Clay kit
    3. Megs #6 on an orbital buffer w/ a TW yellow foam bonnet (They don't sell Megs bonnets here...)
    4. NXT Tech Wax liquid by hand

I use #6 because I need more cleaning power. Down here, the environment is worse and it doubles when it rains! When it rains, I can only wash my car once in 2 days...too tired...

Sometimes, it rains for a full month, day and night. Should that happen, by the end of the month I'm left with swirls and water spots after I washed my car. The claying step only helps a bit. Step 4 (see above) makes it better but swirls and water spots still exist!

I'm planning to go up in the agggresiveness scale to achive my goals due to the fact that they don't sell any D/A polishers here, only rotary!

    Should I replace #6 with #9 on step 4?

I'm in need of a One Step Product for this step. I also can't add more steps in my monthly plan as the missus will kill me because I spend too much time on my car!

    Re: Need more abrasive power...

#6 is has a very mild cleaner. It probably is not enough to get to those deeper swirls. #9 is probably a little better.

It sounds to me that some Fine Cut cleaner might be a good application. I used it on my car to get rid of some of those larger swirls. You could also try some #80 speed glaze.

This would be the ideal way. But I forgot to read a little further. I would then suggest #66 Quik Detailer. No this is not the spray, it is a wax that has the abrasiveness of fine cut cleaner. This would then be topped with #21.

In the midwest, our winter roads are covered with salt, so protection has to be at a high level. I use two coats of GC Wax and #21. I can easily make it two months of use with one coat of #21 with a car that is parked outside all day.

My ideal plan of attack would be:
    Wash
    Clay
Fine Cut Cleaner or Speed Glaze
Polish - your choice #7 is nice, DC2 is also pretty good
    2 coats of NXT Wax
    1 coat of #21

For a good detailing without wasting time:
    Wash
    Clay
    #66
    NXT Wax

I would suggest, if you don't want to spend quite so much time as the full detail PorscheGuy997 suggested, that you do:

      Wash
      Clay
Speed Glaze (#80....assuming you can get it there)
      1 coat of NXT Wax

      That's JMO, though.

What kind of car are you working on?
        How old is it?
Does it have a basecoat/clearcoat finish?

#9 Swirl Remove 2.0 is a very gentle cleaner/polish and when it comes to removing swirls, not filling them in, best results come from applying it with a tool that has some power to actually remove some paint.

#6 Cleaner/Wax may actually be more aggressive than #9, we'll have to check.

Instead of making recommendations first, can you tell us what paint cleaners, cleaner/polishes, compounds and cleaner/waxes are available to you?

Also, what tools do you have if any? Are you going to do all of this work by hand?

Do you have access to ScratchX or ColorX?

Thanks for the reply you guys! Btw Mike, I'm the one who called you in the middle of the night that time! The one who called "Half way around the world"...we were talking about using #6 with a rotary, remember?

Anyways let me tell you all about the stuff that I have:

          Washing
          Gold Class Shampoo & Conditioner

          Claying
          Megs Quik Clay System

          Cleaning
          DC 1 Paint Cleaner
          Scratch X
          M97 Medallion Premium Paint Cleaner

          Polish
          M-07 Show Car Glaze

          Waxing
          M-06 Cleaner Wax
          M-26 Hi Tech Yellow Wax
          NXT Tech Wax liquid

          Maintaining
          Quik Wax
          Quik Detailer
          Speed Wax

          Polisher/Buffer
9" Orbital Buffer w/ TW Foam Bonnet and Terry Bonnet

(As I mentioned earlier, they don't sell any D/A polishers here. I was thinking of getting a rotary because the Megs at Indo here sells all the accessories for it, but that needs A LOT OF practice to master)

          ETC
          Gold Class Endurance High Gloss
Gold Class Versa Angle Tire Brush
          Megs Ultimate Wipe x 2
Megs Supreme Shine Microfiber x 2
          Deep Pile Chenile Wash mitt
          Super Suede Drying Towel
          Water Magnet
Gold Class Rich Leather Cleaner/Conditioner spray
Gold Class High Tech Applicator pads
          Gold Class Even Coat Applicator

          My Ride
2005 (December) Honda Jazz i-DSI, Nighthawk Black Pearl. It's a daily driver, and only parked inside my garage at night because the parking space at my office is open air!

These are the stuffs that I have. For waxing and removing it, I want to do it by hand. For other purposes I prefer doing them with the orbital.

For the Consumer and Mirror Glaze lines, I think the Megs here sell every type of it.

For the Detailer line, I think the Megs here only imported SOME of it.

In essence, I'm trying to develop a PAINT-SAFE monthly plan using my stuffs that delivers the best results possible.

Please be informed that I live in a tropical (meaning HOT) place. Dust and contaminants (tree sap, bird poo) are everywhere, and the during the rainy season, it's a very deadly combination: The rain comes early in the morning. Stops at around 11.00 am. From then on the sun blazes until 7.00 pm. Followed by the rain again around 9.00 pm. This situation happens almost every day!

If I must add/change an item or two or even my technique, please feel free to recommend me. I'm waiting with open arms!

          Thank you all....

hai FunkSERUM, you said your car has been recently detailed at Megs Detail center in Indonesia, i live in indo too, where can i find Megs Detail Center here ??

yes, it's rain almost every day here, but i only quick detail every day and wash my car every week.
maybe you should try polish #7 to fill swirl on your car and put not only one but 2 or 3 coat of NXT, it works great for me.

              Re: Need more abrasive power...

Hahahaha..never thought I meet a fellow countryman here! I thought I was the only one! You can find Megs Detail Center at Radio Dalam, Fatmawati, Kelapa Gading...I even know the Division Manager!

Private message me and we can talk more...

              Anyways, back to the topic...

Thanks for the info ekasptr....I was just thinking the same thing....EXCEPT...What should I clean my paint with? My M-97?

If so, then the proposed plan will be:
              1. Wash with GC
              2. Clay with Quik Clay system
              3. Clean with M-97
              4. Polish with #7
              5. Wax with NXT

This is what I have in mind. However, I only own an orbital buffer with 2 foam bonnets and 1 terry bonnet. If I use the buffer along with ALL the FOAM bonnets for cleaning and polishing...wouldn't there be cross contamination?

If I apply #7 with my hand...I believe I'm gonna have a sore arm by the end of the day. If I'm not mistaken, I must work-in #7 on a section THOROUGHLY..that means polishing one section, by hand, until #7 almost dries! WOW! I'm really gonna have a sore arm!

That's why I think I need to use a multifunctional product to save my arm ...that's why I'm interested in #9, #80, #66 as opposed to what I already have...#6...but which one is safe to use monthly ?

By the way, The Megs Indo here suggest I buy a rotary bufffer, using W7000/W8000 pad with #9. I'm still afraid to use a rotary even though they told me to not worry as long as I keep it in the low RPMs and don't put pressure on it.

              God, I'm so confused.....
              Mike, any opinions?

                Re: Need more abrasive power...

in that case, here's what i have in mind :
                • i guess you need speed glaze #80, it's versatile and can be used with orbital and i think its the most abrasive,CMIIW. if you can't find it, DC 1 also pretty good to do the whole car and scratchX for deep swirl in some area.
                • btw, i apply #7 by hand, yes.. you must work-in #7 on a section THOROUGHLY, but you don't have to put a lot of pressure on it. its easy to use.
                • if you want multifunctional product and use it often like monthly, i guess colorX is the answer, just top it w/ NXT

                  Re: Need more abrasive power...

Thanks ekasptr but ColorX? Isn't #6 more abrasive than ColorX? Hence, wouldn't you prefer #6 over ColorX for a monthly basis?

As for #80, hmm...I'm still having second thoughts about it as it's quite abrasive...but if it's the majority opinion then I guess I'll try it...

I tried using SratchX with an orbital polisher before but it became gummy and difficult to remove...even though Megs Indo does recommend it for my case...but I have to follow it with a QD...

Ok, let's do it this way....

                  I will do:
                  1. Wash with GC
                  2. Clay with Quik Clay System
                  3. Clean with M-97 (orbital)
                  4. Polish with M-97
                  5. Wax with NXT...2 thin coats

                  Do all of you approve?

If time is against me, then:
                  1. Wash with GC
                  2. Clay with Quik Clay system
                  3.
                  4. Wax with NXT...2 thin coats...

Now, should I fill Step 3 with:
                  ColorX, #6, #9, #66 or #80?

Should the answers be ColorX, #6 or #9, do I use a foam bonnet or a terry bonnet on my orbital buffer for polishing?

                    Re: Need more abrasive power...

You really have the basis for a good process laid out. There's just a few minor details you need to have worked out.

#66 is too abrasive to use monthly. It has a fine abrasive which should be used yearly at the most or you could risk damaging your paint.

If it was up to me, I would fill in #6 for step 3. I'm just worried about using something abrasive EVERY MONTH!!!

As for your orbital, I used a foam pad to apply wax. It worked nice to apply wax, but it is meant for just wax. I use terry cloth bonnets for cleaners and polishes of that sort.

                          Re: Need more abrasive power...

Hi guys...i'm also from Indonesia. Nice to see my fellow countrymen here

I've rarely post here but I've been following every tread in this forum for quite long time. IMO Meguiars products are awesome but they are very mild that's why they are considered as absolutely safe and fool proof. Especially the consumer products.

I own a Black harrier 05....however maintaining it in perfect beauty is a chore.
therefore, these are my combo for removing swirl marks and biweekly maintenance.

                          Removing swirl marks.
                          1. Wash with GC
                          2. Clay
                          3. Mix my special combo formula:
                          - 1/4 part of Autoglym fine abrasive
                          - 3/4 part of Speed Glaze
                          4. 2x Topped with 21 or 20

Use this combo formula with rotary about 1700rpm. Your swirl marks is History.

                          Biweekly maintenance.
                          1. Wash with GC
                          2. Remove aspalt/tree sap with bug and tar cleaner
                          3. seal with 21/20

                          Hope this helps.

I know this is a little bit off topic but it was said earlier in this thread (not really sure how to do the whole copy and paste thing with previous threads, sorry) that #66 was too abrasive and should not be used monthly. I have begun using this in my business for customers who just want a one step wax done on their car. Should I be concerned because of it's abrasiveness and let them now it's a good product for the first time, but not repeatedly? Would a product like #21, #3, or #6 better suited for these types of customers. thanks

                              Re: Need more abrasive power...

In my opinion, none of the product suits every customer needs. The first thing that u should do is to inspect whether your customer has single stage paint or clear coated paint. The second one is the condition.

If it is single stage paint, I'd say that you should be more carefull in handling this type of paint since it is generally quite soft. Furthermore, if the paint is still in excellent condition u can use #21 or #3 to maintain the paint optical clarity of your customer cars.

If it is clear coated paint, i'd say that #66 will not do harm if it is used in monthly basis because clear coated paint is generally quite hard. I believe there are threads in this forum that discuss the hardness of the paint.

M#66 does contain some abrassive, cleaner agent, paint oils, and wax which help to restore optical clarity of your customer paint from surface hard water deposit , minor swirls, and road contaminants.
In my opinion, #66 is an effective product to get sparkling paint in single step process which save much time and energy.
The end result is your customer satisfaction seeing his/her car restored to showroom condition in a blink of an eye.
