  • I have an addiction...

This detailing stuff is absolutely addicting. I cannot seem to devote enough time for it or buy enough supplies. All of my other hobbies have been put on hold. I imagine those of you that do it for a living get more than enough. I have yet to do a complete paint detail, but I'm still gathering a few items and most importantly, information.

I was wondering if a cleaner wax would be appropriate to get the paint through winter? I've only clayed the hood and two doors and its not likely I'll be able to do a complete job until it gets warmer. The truck was waxed by the dealer before I got it. What a mess that was. I'm still finding wax. So I would probably just do the panels that have been clayed.

I used to be the same way... but I kinda out grew it, as far as the cleaner wax I think it should hold over during the winter seeing as its a good freidn during those cold months. But atleast u stated ur prob adn now ur on the right track to a uuummm non addicting detailiing....... pppssshhh yea right.. good luck

Cleaner/Wax or ColorX is also easy to apply, which lets you do an extra couple quick details as well to renew everything.

And yeah, you will buy a lot at first, but you will also dial in your go-to products, and not need as much everytime. I think I have every 5 or 6 different waxes, but I only use 1. The rest go on other peoples cars to use them up, so very slowly.

Is temperature more of a concern with wax than a cleaner polish like #80? I'm sure I can get the garage up to 45-50. I'm thinking about trying to knock out a panel or two when time isn't an issue.

Yeah, it would probably be easier to use a cleaner even if the surface is a little cool/damp than it would be getting a wax to dry right.

Incidently, you might want to consider doing your first work outside, or in a clean garage, just in case you forget and pick up the PC while it is turned on.

For a newer car, the regular Meg's cleaner wax available at Wal-Mart is great. ColorX is great but its more for surfaces in worse condition. It wouldn't hurt but it may be overkill. Welcome to the addiction!

As of now, its still new to me and I'm really enjoying it. I pretty much have all the products I need, just have to get some brush assortments and microfiber products.

I've been using the blue microfibers from Walmart (not really fond of this place) that come in packs of 8. Also the 3 pack of really fine polishing mf. I use the blue ones for QD wiping and for wax removal. I'm thinking about switching them to interior, jambs, trim and bumper wiping. Just need to find a replacement for use on the paint, unless anyone thinks they would be ok for wax removal. Just got a water magnet the other day. I like this drying towel. It took the place of a genuine shamois and its been demoted to glass. Should have gotten a couple more of the water magnets.

Either way works the same. It’s just a matter of personal preference.

I haven’t tried any Wally Mart towels so I can’t comment on them but in general you want to use a very high quality towel for removing wax because you’re rubbing pretty hard without any liquid lubrication.
