  • Newbie question: Microfiber vs. Super Terry & High Tech App.Pad vs. Even Coat App.

    Microfiber vs. Super Terry
    and
High Tech Applicator Pad vs. Even Coat Applicator

    What's the difference between these?
    Advantages/Disadvantages?
Do I need both? If so, for what?

    Thanks for any help guys.

I'm interested in this question as well. I'm surprised it's gone unanswered. As a personal preference, I would choose MF over any type of terry cloth.

Re: Newbie question: Microfiber vs. Super Terry & High Tech App.Pad vs. Even Coat App

      I guess personal preference?

Some people like the ECA's more than the little foam pads. I prefer the foam pads (if doing anything by hand) as the ECA's get clogged after some time of use. (or maybe I tend to use too much product on them)

For wiping the car I only use MF's though I had a chance to inspect one of the Meguiars towels and they're really soft with long fibers so using them to wipe the cars finish is OK I assume.

So, for short: Yellow applicator pads to apply products, MF on the outside of the vehicle and terry towels for inside applications (leather conditioners etc)

          madsekci,

          thanks for that input.
do you use liquid waxes or paste waxes though?

from what I had gathered from reading on the forums, the even coat app. was good for liquid waxes.

          Anyone else have any input?

Micro fiber is really good at removing products (polish, clearner, and wax)
You left out licking the water off. Oh, wait a minute, that's my cat, not my car. Uh, I mean my cat licks himself dry. I don't lick my cat dry. Or my car. -PC.

I use Liquid Wax and I prefer the ECA, its a lot easier I find specially when you have a fair bit of black trim. For removal I feel MF does a better job than TT, I also use TT for interior work. I use the foam pads for applying things like ScratchX and DC Paint Cleaner

                Graeme & Maximus,

                Thanks for the help.
I'm trying to gather as much info as I can, so I know what I need.
I'm just getting into this detailing stuff, and all the products Meguiars offers are great, but are a little overwhelming.

In your experience, what's the minimum number of towels & applicator pads I need?
Should I have pads/towels that are dedicated to each product - can I use the same pad for different products?

What's the best way to clean them? (not sure the wife would like me throwing wax soaked pads in the washing machine)

You can never have enough MF towels. Seriously though, they are extremely useful for many surfaces aside from paint. I use them for cleaning interior surfaces, navigation screen and also household uses. Buy one here and there until you find a really good brand. Then you can stock up on them!

Generally speaking, I think it's safe to use the same applicator for cleaners/polishers (or any product that must be removed before drying). Use a separate applicator for your wax. Also, change the applicator when it gets soiled, or too damp. For my SUV, I probably go through 3-4 applicators for cleaner/polisher and 1-2 for applying wax.

                    Matt,

thanks. Letting me know the number of app.pads you use per waxing/polishing is exactly what I'm looking for.
I didn't want to go buy two, then half way through polishing I run out, or vice versa, I buy 10 and then don't need them all.

                    Any other comments/tips are appreciated.

I think I have about 10 MF towels and one water magnet. Don't use them all though but as Matt stated, can't have enough of them.

I use the MF's basically to take all kinds of products away: from paint, from glass, plastic, interior trim, upholstery, leather, etc. I even use them to dry the car prior to using the water magnet.

As for applicator pads, you can use one app. pad (for wax that is) on a small car if you use the right amount of product (which is very little). I'd though get an additional one just in case. So that's two applicator pads for waxing. Cleaners / Polishes actually the same, 2 for each product so that makes a total of 6 applicator pads. Keep in mind though that it all depends on vehicle size.

I can use one pad to work my Ford Fiesta (small car) but the Volvo V70 requires up to three pads for each product.

I use one MF to wipe of every product. So that is cleaner / polish / wax = 3 towels. I use another brand though than those offered by Meguiars because they're larger. So you might double that number if you buy Meguiars MF towels.

                      Good luck.

For stubborn polishes and compounds I like to use a clean terry towel though for final wipe up, MFs are superior. Still, I find when using NXT that removal with a TT is better and leaves VERY little blushing behind compared to the Meguiar's Ultimate Wipe.

For applying cleaners and polishes I prefer the ECA's.
For waxes/sealants the foam pads. Wipe off everything with Supreme Shine Microfiber. Just ordered another 6 pcs. to have enough of these finally.... Oh.... wait.... you CAN'T have enough of them....

                            Ton of great info.

Madsekci, so you have 3 diff. sets of towels & apps., one for wax, one for polish, and one for cleaners?

Also, how do you guys wash these?
(use detergent? throw in washer? dryer or air dry? etc.)

Thanks again for all the help.

i put a bunch of dish detergent in a bucket, filled it with water and tossed my ECAs and MFs in there. so far they've been sitting for 3 days...i almost forgot about those guys. i'll toss them in the washing machine and i'll tell you how they turned out. hope 3 days wasnt too much to let them soak.
