    Buffer for Christmas?

    I got a Ryobi 10" orbital buffer for Christmas (didn't ask for it...so it was a surprise) and I am curious...what should I expect this things uses to be? Applying wax and that is about it? Size way too big? Should I just trade it and and look for something else?

    I personally like applying wax by hand, so a buffer for wax doesn't raise and eyebrow. I do however need something to get rid of imperfections in the paint, and so I assume thing is not going to be up for the task.

    So I just want your general opinions on this thing, and what I should do/expect from it.

    It depends on who you got it from and how much you want to offend them. Even if it did have the power to remove defects, finding a good pad system for a 10 inch is impossible. The much more powerful PC does ok with 6.5 pads and nothing bigger.

      My dad got it for me and will understand because he didn't even know what he was buying in the first place.

      I was thinking about the Makita 9227. From what I understand the PC just doesn't have the ability to remove major paint imperfections. Honestly though the Ryobi is only worth $25...but it is 10" and it just seems so BIG.

      I guess the real question is, for $25, can you get a cheap little buffer (6.5") and have it be effective on minior-medium paint imperfections, and then have the ability to switch pads to a Makita when I end up getting one? Just limited to Bonets?

        Some Lowe's are clearing out PC's for about $50, but you won't find any strong orbital with 6.5 pads for any less than that. You might find a rotary for that $25 (Harbor Freight) but if its your first time, chances are you will cause more damage. Besides that, good pads will cost you 2x the cost of the rotary. A PC can and does do serious correction work. I have remove severe marring with a PC, marring that would make the worst case of swirls look good.             Me and my dad got a PC from my grandma. And well technically its my dads but imma be using it more detailing everyones cars!

              Awsome thanks...one problem though; I believe you disabled private messanging and emailing.

              Essentially I want something that I could get incredible results from for an every day driver that is VERY well maintained. This is essentially what I am up against...near paint failure. Basically medium cut scratches and medium to major swirling. I've seen buffers perform miracles and guess that you could say I'm unsure if a PC can perform nearly on the same level of restoration that a true rotary can.

              Cars are a major hobby of mine...nothing perfessional, but definatly an obsession

                  You guys in Ca are lucky! Meg's is having a clinic Sat., Jan 6, something like 8 to 3 coffee and donuts and lunch included. Only 68 miles from you. Great trip for you and dad. Drive the car with problem paint and they just may show what is possible both PC and buffer, or say forget it! Free to forum members, $30 to non-members (dad must register)

                          Will be on a snowboarding trip in Lake Tahoo, so that is out of the question.

                          So opinions on what I should do...go grab the 6" cheapo buffer from Home depot, or what?

                            Someone already mentioned Lowes for the PC7336SP being closed out. I got a display unit for $25 (last one) here in Houston last month. Check at your closest and have them check the computer for other stores inventory and shop/wait for a good deal. You will ned Meg's backer plate and some pads along with chemicals. You are on the right forum to get help from the company, do not tie their hands with off-brand items.
