  • Claying

Hi, sorry if this is a dumb question but I have never used it before and would like to know the best way to clay my car?

I realize I need to use QD as a lube, but how much pressure do I need to apply to the clay bar?

Also does it matter whether the movement is straight or circular.

    And does it clog up?

    Thanks

    Graeme

You don't want to put any pressure on the clay, just glide it back and forth over the surface using LOTS of lube. Keep folding the clay over so you don't scratch the surface with any of the contaminents.

Thanks for the reply yakky, ok so just glide it over the surface. Do I do it in small sections or do I do the whole car? and wipe off when its dry or wet?

        Thanks

I think most, do small sections, then wipe the detailer off with a quality microfiber towel and move on to clean/polish/wax.

          -or-

I like to do a second wash after claying so I clay(don't wipe off detailer) then wash and dry. Just personal preference.

            Re: Claying

Small sections is what most prefer, I usually do 1/2 a large panel at at time. A good trick to save a little bit of QD (I usually go through about 1/2 a bottle of QD for a small car and a full 16oz bottle on a large SUV) is to start at the top of the panel and work down. Mist the top of the panel heavily and the bottom lightly. As you work down it will spread the QD. Use LOTS of QD, using too much can't hurt, too little will for sure.

Depending on what QD you used and what wax you are using, you may want to wash the car. Most of Meguiars stuff is supposed to be compatible but some other lines may not be.

I use car wash soap as my lubricant, I generally prefer using #00 as it is designed for wet sanding use as well so in this aspect is 'better'.
