  • Removing wax with wool pad...?

Hi all. Merry Christmas. I just wondering if it's ok to use the wool type bonnet to remove wax. I bought the B&D KP600 and it come with two types of wool pad. 1st type which looks like a cutting wool pad, u need to tie it one. 2nd type is like a microfiber type of wool that is very soft, which u wrap it like the blue foam applicator. I feel the wool texture & it seems to be so soft. Softer than terry cloth towel and similar softness like the microfiber cloth.

Do u think it will inflict swirls onto the clear coat? I know that Megs wool pad is use for cutting action. And it there any difference from that type. I already mod it with velcro to use it with megs w8006 & w9006 pads. Hehehe. Thk u kindly.

        Why remove wax?

When you prepare your paint for new wax,the use of a cleaner polish like Nos. 80, 82 and 83 or a cleaner wax will remove any old wax.

Hehehe. I mean removing the haze dry wax with it. Not removing old wax. I see many ads in the net shows they remove the hazed wax with their wool pads. So it makes me wonder if it can be done. Its not a terry bonnet though. I will go home and post a picture of the wool pad for you guys to see. As I'm in the office now. Thanks a lot. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Take it easy.

DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE HAZED WAX WITH A WOOL PAD. Mike Phillips recommends a 7006 cutting pad WITH A MICRO FIBER BONNET on it to remove hazed wax bcause it is stiffer than an 8006 or 9006 pad.

Do not use a bare wool pad (or any kind of bare foam pad for that matter) to remove hazed wax.

Personally, I've found the time I've spent reading the how-to section here very worthwhile.

Hi, here are how the wool pad look like...?
As u can see the texture on the right is different. And its very soft.

But I guess both are also wool? Here are pict tht shows it applying & removing the wax?

So what do u guys think? Ok or not ok? Thank you.

Hi frustrateddetailer, well the unit is very quite and smooth.
At 1st wanted to get the Bosch GEX270AE but I was all confused with OPM & RPM. The Bosch unit was 7500 - 12000 OPM and another brand Kinzo RO sander was selling cheaper for RM69 was 6000 - 11000 OPM. I thought tht since rotary buffer was like 300 - 1200 RPM. I was afraid it was too fast and can hurt my clear coat paint. Also the Megs G-100 speed was only 2500 - 6000 OPM.

And only B&D was like within the OPM with G-100. The Bosch & Kinzo ones were higher for a polisher/waxer. Both are sanders purposes I think. As I think the engineers at their respected companies classified their machine as sanders for a purpose rite. So I went to get the B&D unit. And since it was at 4400 OPM, let's say at bout G-100's speed setting 4. I guess it was compatible for applying waxes. I don't know the orbits spin specs though. Since I'm kinda new so I don't mind learning step by step at the time. Experimenting with different machine & techniques. Happy Merry Christmas to all. God bless.

IMO its not that great of an idea.... Stick with the microfiber bonnets.

too. I did try removing dry haze wax on a CD with it and no scratches found....? And I tried waxing the CD with it too. No scratches too...?

Re: Removing wax with wool pad...?

Everyone here has to take note that this member is NOT using rotary buffer but a traditional orbital buffer, in this case you should be perfectly fine to remove the wax with a wool bonnet however a cotton, or microfiber bonnet would probably be more gentle to the paint.

If it's working to your expectations go for it, if not then seek out a few extra bonnets for your buffer that are made from cotton or microfiber, the company you purchased this tool from probably offers them as accessories.

                      Happy Thanksgiving!

Re: Removing wax with wool pad...?

Hi Bernard, As you know I bought this a few weeks back and we talked about the B & D on some other threads. On my older car I used the wool bonnet it came with but I had the same questions as well. However, it states you are suppose to use it to take off the hazed wax - but I still was unsure. Being in Thailand they do not carry any MF bonnets at Bangkok Meguiars so what I did was bought a few MF towels and had my wifes mom make a custom bonnet with MF and I have to say it turned out great. So far I did a test area and applied NXT by hand and then used the newly created MF Bonnet to take off the hazed wax and it came right off and seemed to be very delicate. However, have you tried the very soft bonnet it came with- as you showed in your picture the right one? That seems very soft as well. As far as the blue pad it comes with I think those are really cheap and always tear near the end of any application and not sure if they are creating any swirls in the paint. What do you think? Therefore I have just put it on by hand. Let me know. Thanks, Asaf

Hi Asaf. I think I'll just try it out and see. Since it came with two of the soft wool pad. I was thinking maybe to use it. And if its dirty already I'll throw it away. They don't sell the soft wool pad here. B&D only have the other tie type (on the left) wool pad for sale only.

I will try to mod the MF bonnet like u teach. Thks a lot. Take care.

                              Hi Bernard,
I just got the BOSCH PEX270AE today at RM320, have not try it out yet cos haven get the right pad for it. When I turn it on, it doens't rotate much as stated in the spec 7500RPM-12000RPM. I can even stop the rotation with my hand. There's a thread in the rotary buffer forum explained what is OPM and RPM. I will get the Meg pad tomorrow and try it out with #80 then will let you know the result.
