  • Do you ever just "wax."

Ive got alittle break coming up for thanksgiving and really want to detail the jeep since Ive had it offroad a few times and have sprayed it off a few times with a pressure washer. I really do not have time to clean, polish, and wax the paint. The surface is still smooth to the touch so I do not believe i need to clay.. Im thinking about using NXT since it has some cleaners in it and then topping that with #26.. Shouldnt take my an hour to apply and take that off with the pc..

Just wondering if any of you all just wax the paint(like MANY DIY people do, lol) without cleaning it first..

I usually wax my cars once a month. I will not polish/clean them once a month. They are garage kept. I look at the paint to see if there are any imperfections and I will work on that area. My wifes SUV that is outside I use NXT with my PC and have had excellent results. Look at what you are waxing, if it is not clean, meaning no imperfections, your end result may not be what you are looking for.

I was wondering about the lack of polish too.. The polish is what brings the shine out in the paint. I guess Ill loose alittle shine by just waxing it.. It will still be protected though..

i think you should just use color X.... that is my answer when i feel too lazy to do the 3 steps seperately.... color X does it all in one step.... and then you can top it with NXT or 26 or watever other wax you want.

I inspect the paint first. I will not just wax a car unless the paint is smooth to the touch and doesn't require claying. Applying wax over swirls is OK, applying wax over contaminents and dirt is not.

I just did it yesterday. I washed the car, checked to see if the paint was smooth and then I waxed. I didn't even dress the tires. ( Canadian winter= dresssing gone in seconds)

From time to time I will just wax. Kind of what sneek mentioned... check the paint and then go from there.

I agree 100%!! BlueLibby04, since you were thinking about NXT and 26 anyway, which means two passes around the car, using ColorX and then NXT won't really be much more work and you'll still be fully protected. Go for it! Besides, you can pick up ColorX at any (fill-in-the-blank)Mart.

Re: Do you ever just "wax."

When I don't have time for a full detail I just wax. I'll run thru a carwash, then wipe it all down with Last Touch to make sure I get all the dust off. Then I'll throw on some NXT. I've been thinking about getting some cleaner wax like ColorX, but I don't want to strip off the wax I already have on. Seems to work good for me.

Re: Do you ever just "wax."

I've been waxing cars seriously for a couple of decades or so and while I've used cleaners in the past, only on cars which had some sort of oxidation. I haven't bought a car like that in a good many years though and have been sticking to cars with nice paint and keeping it that way. In my experience if you don't neglect your paint you shouldn't need this other stuff very often. I do admit though that I may give polish a try although I really wonder what good it will do over a lot of wax that has taken time to build up. As for cleaning/clay I wouldn't do that unless there's some visual or felt damage and weekly washing and waxing has always been real real good to me here. Once again I'm not going to undo a lot of time and money spent in the past since it takes me several months to accumulate a real good waxing base and I'd be seriously bummed out if I lost the work to something stripping the stuff off.

Having said that people have their own needs and preferences here and it's all good as long as you're enjoying the fruits of your work

You wuould get better results by using cleaner wax, or even colorX, then you still get the look you want with the protectaion

Please do yourself a favor and read though Mike's posts on layering waxes. If you don't, I'll understand as it may shoot your "accumiliated wax base" theory all to hell.
