  • #9 or #80?

If #9 is successful at removing minor swirls should it be followed up by #7 to instill additional polishing oils and then NXT?
Or would a better approach be to use #80 (instead of #9) and then go right into the NXT?
I may be mistaken but I think I read somewhere that #9 does not have the polishing (oils) ability of #80.

this will work fine, as #80 has better ability of removing scratches/swirls than #9 and you can go straight to your wax after...

Does it also have more/better polishing oils than #9?

I agree... go with #80, I have #9 and have used several times but I prefer #80 no questions asked. #80 does polish up very nice but I like to add a pure polish(like #7) after then on to wax, now... this is just a personal preference but IMO it gives that extra 'pop'.

          Thanks gb,
I tried #9 on a test area and it did in fact remove the swirls but it seems that most people prefer to start with #80. I have not tried #80 so I was wondering what difference I would see between the two. #80 is always referred to in these forums as a product that has alot of polishing oils. Btw my car is black if that makes a difference..

I don't want to hijack this thread or anything, but I'm kinda wondering the same thing. I called the Meguiars hotline to find out the differences between DC#1 vs. ScratchX and DC#2 vs. Show Car Glaze. I was planning on buying seperate cleaner and polish. When the guy found out I have a DA he said to try #80 since it's a cleaner/polish in one and it's easier to use than the #83 I already have. How much of an advantage would there be to using a polish after #80 before NXT? My main goal is to remove some light swirls/water spots in the paint before using NXT. Also, I want the finish to be as smooth as possible.

Well... a pure polish will add polishing oils to your paint, now if a pure polish is necessary after a cleaner or cleaner/polish, probably not. On darker colored vehicles a pure polish will show more so than on a lighter colored vehicle adding more 'pop' to your finished product. Now, that is not to say its not worth applying a pure polish on a lighter colored vehicle, if you don't notice the difference you are still adding the polishing oils to your paint. IMO its worth it to add a pure polish to your detailing routine, but if you prefer to skip the pure polish step... #80 (cleaner/polish) polishes up very nice and will look just fine.

Thanks for the advise. I think I will just stick with #80. The car already has a very deep glossy finish so I mainly just concerned with replenishing any lost oils in the paint before waxing. Also hoping #80 will remove the water marks and swirls. I was hesatant to do many passes when I used #83 on the car some time ago so I probably just didn't work the product enough.
Thanks again for your help and hope you have better luck with the rainX! One more thing....if I do need the extra power of #83, should I follow that with #80 or not, since #83 has diminishing abrasives???

Actually #80 has diminishing abrasives as well but.... you do not have to follow #83 with #80, you can but you don't have to. #80 is a great place to start, seems everyone that uses #80 has very good luck with it, plenty of photos on MOL to prove it!

#80 with a DA will work better at removing swirls and water spots than any of the products you mentioned, with the exception of #83. You should only use the #83 if the #80 won't remove the water spots. Then you would most likely need to apply the #80 again. If you have a dark colored car, you will get a little more gloss with a dedicated polish like DC#2 or #81. Either the DC #2 or #81 will be easier to work with than the #7.
