    Hello everyone.

As some may know new car is on the way.I was wondering if the new quick clay detailing system removes swirl marks.

Is once every three months ok or should i make it every 5 or 6 months.

    Hi N52,

Detailing clay is for removing things that are sitting on top of the surface not below the surface. In order to remove defects below the surface you need to remove paint and claying doesn't remove paint, that's the job of a a paint cleaner like ScratchX.

To know when you need to clay, you don't go by time, you go by feel. After you wash your car, fell the horizontal surfaces and check to see if you can feel any little bumps on the paint, these would be,

    Above Surface Bonded Contaminants

If you feel them, then clay, if you don't then follow your normal car care procedures.

As far as removing defects go,

As far as removing a scratch out of a plastic or rubber bumper, we wrote an article that answers this question because it's asked so often...

      It's in the Information Station

      In the sub-forum Hot Topics

And here it is, (Lots of great stuff in the Information Station)

What it means to remove a scratch out of anything...

In order to remove a scratch out of anything, metal, plastic glass, paint, etc. You must remove material around the scratch until the surface is level or equal to the lowest depths of the scratch or scratches.

The below diagram if for paint, the the same thing applies to just about an surface material or coating.

In essences, you don't really remove a scratch, you remove material around a scratch.

Then the big question is, is the material or coating workable, as in can you abrade small particles of it and leave behind an original looking surface. For example, some things you can abrade, (remove the scratch), but you can never completely remove all of your abrading marks, thus you can't really fix the problem, all you can do is exchange one set of scratches of a different set of scratches.

The next questions is, how thick is the surface material you're working on or the coating. You are limited to what you can do by the thickness of these to things, (surface coating or surface material), and whether or not this surface is workable.

Sometimes you don't know what you can so until you try. It's always a good idea to test your choice of products, applicator materials and application process, (By hand or by machine), to an inconspicuous area. If you cannot make a small area look good with your product, applicator and process, you will not be able to make the entire surface look good. It's always a good idea to test first and error on the side of caution, versus make a mistake you cannot undo.

        That was fast.

Thanks.I saw the effect on the green MB e320.Scratch x is really good.

One question that just came to my mind now is:If you keep using Scratch X over a long period of time would the paint kinda fade?

Re: Quik Clay Detailing System.Does it remove Swirl marks?

There's also a great article on your claying question in the Hot Topics forum, (so much great reading in the Hot Topics forum), here it is for your reading pleasure...

How often do I need to clay my car's finish?

          The question is often asked,

"How often do I need to clay my car's finish?"

          The answer is,

"It depends on where you park your car and what's floating in the air"

If you spent one day detailing your car including claying it and applying a coating of wax, and the next day your car was parked in a parking lot like this,

And about 100 yards away is a painter elevated into the sky spraying paint onto a building like this...

Then because the wind will tend to carry the overspray through the air until it finds a place to touch down and come to rest, you may very well need to clay your car the next day.

"How often you need to clay your car's finish depends on what's floating in the air where you park your car"

As I drove down the road from where this building is being sprayed, I stopped to take a photograph of this Corvette sitting behind a fence in the owners front yard while he was doing some upgrades to the house that required access to the garage.

It's completely possible the paint overspray being sprayed into the air just a few blocks down the road could come to rest on this Corvette's finish as well as everything else, including the window glass and the convertible top.

What Meguiar's teaches is that in order to know whether or not you need to clay, or re-clay your car's finish, you need to evaluate the condition of the finish, with both your eyes and your sense of touch.

          So the answer to,

"How often do I need to clay my car's finish?"

Is as often as necessary and the way you determine if claying is necessary is to evaluate the condition of the finish, with both your eyes and your sense of touch.

No. ScratchX is versatile in that if you apply it gently, its cleaning ability is limited, if you put some passion behind the pad, then the cleaning ability increases. There is nothing to fear under normal conditions.

Great. That means you can keep removing the swirl marks that the car will get over its lifetime without ''changing'' the brightness of the paint.

Thanks for all that.Everyday i learn tons of new things here.Awesome forum

Mike: thanks for posting pics of that paint sprayer. I just completed a complete removal of Deck/Fence Sealant overspray on a black Mustang and it was a chore! I tried wash + clay and the removal was not 100%, so I went to Clay + Detail Spray and that worked.

                Here's some pics: Windshield Before

Windshield after Wash + Clay. Didn't remove it all, so I went to Detail Spray

                Example of spray on door:

Finished Over Spray Removal + Polishing

The sadness to this job was the car's owner has to take the contractor to small claims court because he thought the overspray "wasn't that bad"...ouch!
