  • Removing painted lettering

Hi All, I will be getting a 77 Corvette this weekend and have a question.
The paint is original, factory lacquer, and it has the previous owners initials
hand lettered on the doors plus some goofy painted star things.

What is a safe way to remove this stuff with as little possible damage to the original finish?

    Thanks!

    Re: Removing painted lettering

    Hi Jimmy,

If the lettering is painted on, then you might try some paint thinner, but first test it in an inconspicuous area as it might affect the lacquer.

Another option would be to try to clay it off because if it's a soft paint claying may actually take it off.

You could try focused pressure with a product like ScratchX with just a finger or two against a terry cloth towel

There are other ways, but if the goal is to avoid damaging the original paint, the other ways start to trend towards the dangerous side.
