  • Okay, #83/Rotary not cutting it

As you guys know, I'm pretty experinced, but let me tell you. I have run into my archnemisis.

Its a C5 Vette (which I have done tons of before) but this one has even harder then clear.

I did 5 passes of M83/rotary/8006 at between 1500-1200 rpm on a test spot. Nothing, just a slight amount of swirl removal. I have M84 and I have used it with the 7000/7006 pad before but I usually get really bad hologramming when used with the agressive pad.

Any suggestions? I was thinking of M84 on a 8006 pad, anybody use this combo before?

    Mike?
    Anybody?

    Help!!!!!!!!

I would try using M83 with the cutting pad (the purple one). That might give you the extra abrasiveness that you need.

If I go to a cutting pad I get TERRIBLE hologramming... which I'm trying to avoid...

Is it possible that the car was re-cleared and the scratches are under the clear you are working on?

Usually when they reclear cars, they sand the old clearcoat and it the new clear fills in the old scratchs, no?

If you are trying to remove scratches, you might try a light compound and the 8006 pad with the rotary.

Or, you can look at 3000 grit pad on the orbital. I've done a few late model BMW's with the 3000 grit pad followed by light compound on a rotary, followed by #83.

Re: Okay, #83/Rotary not cutting it

Okay I just buffed the front of the car using M84/8006 pad...

Let me say that it removed 90 percent of the defects, where as 83 wasn't even making a dent..

Some wierd things though (as compared to using 84/7006 pad)

              a) The surface gets a thick coat of oil on it, and adjacent areas are covered in oil drops that removes easily...

              b) The compound itself breaks down QUICK, as in one-two passes, but leaves behind the oil that has a seemingly unlimited play time. This allowed me to back off my RPM from 1800, to 1500, to about 1200, then a final pass at 600.. The resulting finish is 90 percent defect free and 100 percent HOLOGRAM free. 84 as a last step polish? Maybe, it looks that good.

              c) The product gums QUICK if you don't start at high RPM. I usually start at 600 or so to spread the product then ramp up to 1200-1500 and begin polishing. However, with the M84/8006 combo, this caused the product to gum on the surface and it would just clump up. I had to pick the bead up at full throttle and quickly cover the surface area before making one or two passes.

              d) Because the compound is so dry, it does dust pretty bad. However, like I said, the finish is so wet and glossy its amazing, and 100 percent hologram free. I may or may not finish with 80/rotary, I don't even know if I'll see an improvement.

I'll post some pictures in a second.

I'm surprised that happens. I've used M83 and a cutting pad on my vette with no problems. I know you've done vette's before and your work is excellent, so I don't doubt your technique. Maybe the car has been repainted? Hopefully Mike may have some idea's.

Re: Okay, #83/Rotary not cutting it

Some befores, the defects are much worse then what the camera would capture. M83/8006/1500 rpm didn't really even dent these, even after 4-5 passes, I wasn't seeing any improvement.

I checked the car in the sun prior to making the post above, but when I went back outside the sun was hidden so I took a picture using the camera's flash. As you can see, the surface is close to flawless...

Look at the gloss and reflection left behind. I am debating whether to go with M80/rotary or maybe even M80/pc after this or going straight to an LSP.

Re: Okay, #83/Rotary not cutting it

The trick to using M84 with a cutting pad on a newer Corvette is to,

Make sure each panel is clean before buffing.
Clean you after each application of fresh product.
Don't try to tackle to large of an area at one time, about a quarter of the hood for reference.

Of all of these, keeping you pad clean after each application will help the most. One way to do this is to hold a terry cloth towel into the pad as you bring up the RPM's and then push the towel into the pad. It's hard to explain how using a keyboard and I'm not sure we have a picture of this technique in the gallery but we may.

Working clean, and working the product until it's almost gone but you can still see this light oily film on the surface, by doing this you can cut down the swirl and haze to a level that M83 will easily remove it.

Wow that could take a while to take a shower after each application of fresh product.... just kidding

Just spray yourself with some QD instead of a shower. Thats what I do!
You left out licking the water off. Oh, wait a minute, that's my cat, not my car. Uh, I mean my cat licks himself dry. I don't lick my cat dry. Or my car. -PC.

Okay, some more pics in a second.

Thanks Mike, I followed your advice and went for the 7006 pad at 1500 rpm with M84. I made two passes over the whole car, but slowed the second passes RPM done for the final couple strokes to try to even out the finish. I was still left with fairly bad hologramming, visiable even in the garage lighting.

This morning I woke up early and made a pass over the entire car again, this time with M83/8006 pad at about 1100 RPM. It cleaned the haze up and left the finish flawless. Lately I have been finishing down with a rotary and not getting any trails/hologramming, but it was/is rainy and cloudy so I couldn't tell. Not one to leave anything to chance, I deceided to finish down with M80/PC.

I have forgotten just how good a finish Speed Glaze can leave if you work it hard, it even lessened/removed some RIS that still exsisted. The finish is super wet and the metal flake is popping. Also the Vette is 100 percent swirl free!!!

Here are some more pictures after finishing down with M80

PS in the above pic of my Jimmy reflecting off the Vette, you can see that after 7 months, the water is still beading nicely on the hood. Last time I waxed it was with #21 x2 and a topper of 26, and that was over 7 months ago. (Hell, probably closer to 9 months if I really think about). No matience whatsoever other then about a monthy wash with Hyperwash and followed by Quik Detailer to get some water spots off after I wash it.
