  • 21 versus 20, which has more cleaning ability?

I have some light water spotting on my car and quick detailer didn't remove the spots yesterday, I know they are not etched or anything, so I was going to hit it with something this morning and between 20 and 21, I was curious to which has the best cleaning ability.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Tom,

Meg's #20 Polymer Sealant has more cleaning ability than #21.

    I hope this helps!

        Hey Tom,

        No problem!

I have used #20 for over 20 years and have never been disappointed with it yet! Though it does not have the richness of #21, it does fit the bill when a little cleaing power is needed, and excellent durability is required. A combo I really like, is #20 topped with #21.

Hmmmmmm. Never thought of that combo!

Tom, what were the water spots from? Anything with hard water? They will be more difficult to remove. I have had good luck with NXT Speed Detailer, even with hard water spots, if they are fresh. NXT Speed Detailer seems to work a lot better, at least for me, than Quik Detailer. It cleans better, gives more gloss and slickness, and adds protection.

Definitely get some #20 if you can though. If the Speed Detailer doesn't work, then #20 is your best bet before using a dedicated cleaner/polish. #20 comes in handy in the winter as it dries quickly even in cold weather. I read a post where Big Lots has it for $4.99! Almost too good to be true! I need to check that one out.

Re: 21 versus 20, which has more cleaning ability?

            Hey RamAir,
We've had so much rain lately and my car was filthy, so I washed it, but when I was done, something came up didn't have time to dry it, normally this wouldn't be an issue with my DI water, but I think the cartridges need to be replaced. I pulled it in last night and went to wipe it down with Final Inspection and I still had the spots. I said earlier it was Quick detailer, but I tend to call most spray and wipes quick detailer.
In between leaf raking today and yard work, I tried NXT paste on the PC with a finishing pad on the trunk with no avail, so I switched to 20 on a finishing pad on the same area and with the PC and it did help, but they are still there. I tried some AIO by hand and nothing. I ran out of time and energy in between all the yard work, but luckily I think I will be taking of tomorrow as it's supposed to be nice. I am thinking I will try 82 first on the PC, then if that doesn't cut it, go to 80. On my black Grand Prix, I have a hard time getting 80 to finish out nicely as it seems to cause light hazing, I usually have to follow it 82 on a finishing pad to get it to look right. Car scratches easily...

I was surprised that this happened actually, I had a coat of 21 on my car that was probably 3 weeks old and most of the time with the DI water filter I don't have spotting issues and if I am pressed for time, I just let it air dry. This time it was a little different. I will tackle this tomorrow and post what combo I had to go to, to fix this.

            Tom

What you are saying makes sense. Rinse water from the faucet can definitely cause spotting, it normally isn't the rain. This winter I will be using the faucet inside the garage which is on soft water, so that will minimize spotting issues.

AIO is very good on water spots and is definitely worth a try. One time I tried a leaf blower to dry off my black WS6 and had instant water spots! AIO took them right off. And these were water spots that #83 (by PC) would not remove for some reason.

I am really surprised that the #80 causes hazing on your paint. But others have said the same thing with paint on other cars. The clearcoat on the hood of my WS6 was very soft and would scratch very easily, yet the #80 would not scratch it. However, the #83 would haze it very easily. The paint on the rest of the car was much harder.

Another product to try if you have some on hand is MPPC. It worked very well for me on bird dropping etchings.

Do you take the nozzle of your hose when you rinse the car off? That will make the water roll of the paint, there will be fewer beads and hence fewer water spots.

Re: 21 versus 20, which has more cleaning ability?

Thanks for the reply RamAir and thanks for bringing up MPPC, I have 4 bottles of it I got at Katrina relief and forgot I had it. I was hoping not to have to go to a bunch of work on this, I am beginning to believe what someone told me about owning a black car, and that you don't own it, it owns you when it comes to keeping it nice...

I am surprised AIO didn't work either, Maybe I need to give it another try... I love that stuff, I used after I am finished with a deal to clean glass and on the rubber trim where any wax has been left.

I haven't' washed my car with just the hose in a while, I use a karcher electric pressure washer hooked up to the DI filters to limit the flow. When I am finished washing, I usually just turn it down and give it a good rinse and have used the leaf blower also to dry it. I need to use my little TDS meter to measure the output of the filters to see if they are spent. First time I have had this problem using this system. I would have probably wiped it down but something came up and I didn't think letting it air dry would be any big deal like usual. It was super windy yesterday, so it didn't take long to dry, but it had stuff from the trees and a few leaves on it, wonder if that played a part???

I'll update this tomorrow when I figure out what works without getting to crazy!

Did you try the AIO with the PC? When I used the AIO I did use it by hand. the hood had MPPP on one side and Klasse SG on the other side. The water spots came off more easily from the side waxed with MPPP. I don't recall how long I let the AIO haze before I removed it.

If nothing else works you may have to use multiple applications of #83. Do you have a rotary? But give the MPPC a try, you may be surprised.

Black is worth all the effort it takes to keep it looking great!

Kellyinkc, check out Big Lots if you have any near you. They are rumored to have #20 for $4.99!
