  • Newbie looking help!

    Hello gentlemen!

I am new to the detailing world (and this forum), but have spent the better part of a week doing A LOT of reading about detailing. What has sparked this interest you ask? Well, I just purchased a 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX. The color is Urban Grey Metalic (very sparkly silver/gray). I have had the for 3 weeks now, and promised myself I would do my utmost to treat it with the greatest of care.

Basically, I would like some advise on the products I have chosen to keep the car looking new as long as possible.

Here is all I have currently done to this vehicle at this point in time.

    1) wash - already own and use meg's washing products for this step

Next is what I plan on as my next steps:

    2) Meg's Clay bar kit

    3) Meg's Deep Crystal Pain Cleaner

    4) Meg's Deep Crystal Polish

    5) Meg's Nxt Gen Wax liquid

Ok. Now on to the questions

Since the car is so new, when do you recommend I complete steps 2-5?

Are the above listed products ok for the color of this car?

What do you suggest using for the cleaner/polisher/wax to rub the product in, as well as wiping it away? I already have some of the Meg's Ultra Plush Terry towels. I figure using those for the wipe process.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this and helping me out. I look forward to reading the replies. In the meantime, here is a picture of the car the day after I bought it.

    Re: Newbie looking help!

Welcome to the Subaru club.. one word of advice though, consider the hood-lip bug deflector, or some sort of film protection for the front end. I got a few chips real quick on the hood, got the deflector, haven't had any since, just a couple bumper nicks. I got that advice from Mosca, another Subaru owner on here.

    1. Wash - Good, remember to use the two bucket system, Grit Guards, and good quality towels, etc.

2 - 5. Good. Remember two coats of wax is best.

Well, you do have options. I love using ColorX on my car, and then topping it with #21. You could top it with Gold Class. And then do the full 2-5 once a year or so. My car is a daily driver, parked outside, so ColorX is a great product to cut out steps.

For applying, you want to use the yellow Hi-Tec foam applicators, and either Plush Terrys or Supreme Shine MF towels to remove. Figure an applicator per product, plus a couple spares, and at least 2 towels per step.

Thanks for the quick reply Murr1525!

I like your idea of using the ColorX. I take it I would just use that in replacement of cleaner and polisher, yet still use clay bar? Also, I think I might just go with the Nxt Gen wax at first to see how I like it.

Also, do you think I need to really perform all these steps on such a new car?

I am interested in your suggestion of the bug deflector/film protectant. I will have to look into that.

      Thanks again!

With ColorX, the process would be:

          1. Wash
          2. Clay
          3. ColorX
          4. Wax - One coat of your favorite wax to top.

Plus, since it cuts out a few steps, you will feel like doing it more often.

Then just wash often, and follow up with a detailer spray or spray wax if you like.

After you clay this first time, you will get a feel for clean paint. Then, when you decide it is time to ColorX, etc again, you will also be able to feel if it needs clayed.

As far as do you have to... well, you dont "have" to do anything.. but may as well get off to a completly clean start, and you will get the best looks that way. And you'll end up insane like us...

(And there are always glass products, dash products, tires, trim, wheelwells, polished aluminum... You're screwed....)

Ahh, that clears things up nicely Murr. Thanks!!!!

Yeah, I am already screwed. My list of things to buy already excedes $100 according to my Meg's shopping cart.

                One last question.

I assume that all of my listed products are safe on clear coat?

If you're going to buy more than $100, you should buy from Autodetailingsolutions for sure! You can a get a free storage bag with a purchase that large! I just ordered a bunch of stuff and am expecting mine next week.

As for doing stuff to a new car.... I bought my Mustang in May and I:

                  1. wash with meg's gold class wash

                  2. clay

                  3. polish (Deep crystal)

                  4. Gold glass wax

                  5. Touch ups in between with QD and Quik wax

I skip the paint cleaner step as I feel that the clay is good enough for what's on my car and I don't have damaged paint.
