Anyone use an air powered random orbit?

Just wondering if anyone has ever used air powered random orbit sander/polishers? I have the compressor but I don't have a polisher yet. What do you guys think? Are they too fast or too powerful? Thanks in advance for your help everyone. I looked at an Ingersoll Rand and the free speed was 12,000 RPM. This sounds a little fast for car polishing but I wasn't sure.

I have a Snap On that I have played around with. What I found is that since it has to be oiled it will sling some oil out the exhaust port on occasion. The other factor to be considered is the hose is always a pain to keep off the surfaces and since it is lighter than a DA you have to exert more downward pressure on it to achieve results. Plus you've got to listen to that compressor kick in and out while your working if it's close by. The electric PC DA is just a lot easier to use.

It takes a big (and expensive) compressor to supply enough air for buffing. It’s very common in factories and body shops. It’s very uncommon for detailers. (Having one puts you’re way ahead of most of us in the power tool arms race. )

As long as you pick up a DA that’s designed for polishing (not just sanding) it should work well. If I had the air power I’d be looking at tools from Dynabrade and National Detroit.

I use the Snap-On air sander (random orbit) with a 3000 grit pad for scratch removal and it works great. It's very light weight and easy to use. I'll post pics of it in action this weekend as I have a dark blue BMW to do.
