  • New, need advice.

    Hi,

I'm new to the detailing aspect. cars a Torch Red 04 mustang

I've started my collection of products and did the first full detail job before stopping by here and reading a little. Not completely satisfied, car looked good then later on started noticing the swirls and surface scratchs.

I used a craftsman orbital buffer kind of thing.

    1. Washed using blue corral soap and a mit.
    2. Used DC#1 on entire car, swapped pad and buffed it off.
    3. Used DC#2 on entire car, buffed off.
    4. Used NXT Tech Wax to seal it in.

So my problem now is, I want to get the swirls out, are my products good for the job or should I be using something different? I'm kinda clueless here. Any advice.

    Thanks, Mike

    Re: New, need advice.

if u want to remove swirls, then #80 would be the best approach and ofcourse, with the DA. this combination is best when you're inexperienced with rotary. the steps would be:
    1. wash the entire car
    2. clay, clay and of course clay
    3. #80 with DA
    4. apply 2 coats of ur favorite wax (meguiars ofcourse! ) & buff to a gleaming shine.
    5. post your work at the show off.
before u rev em up, shine em up!

Well a couple things.... First DC#1 is a very gentle cleaner and may not be the best option for removing swirls. Second the Craftsman polisher you have may not have the power and speed needed for the job, is it a something like in the photo below, or maybe a 6" version? The orbital polishers are good for applying wax but may not be as good for removing swirls and surface defects like a PC. You can try something like #80 suggested by frustrateddetailer and see what you can do -or- this might be another option: How To Remove Swirls By Hand

Yup, its just like the one in the picture. My dad has a high-speed buffer, guess you guys call it a rotery. Don't those just make swirls though?

In the hands of an experienced detailer a rotary can do some amazing work, in the wrong hands it can do some amazing damage.

Most here who use a machine use a 'PC', easy to use and anyone can use it with no worries. The machine you have may not have the power to remove swirls but you should be able to apply a nice layer of wax with no problem. DC#1 is very gentle paint cleaner and and may be limited in its ability to remove swirls... Products like #80 need the speed and power of a PC to break down the 'diminishing abrasives'.

May not be what you wanted to hear but I hope it helps!

So you'd recommend picking up some http://www.meguiars.com/?pro-cleaner...hs/Speed-Glaze

And getting a DA, like that Porter-Cable 7424?

What's the difference between all those #80 like cleaners? How do I know which ones good for the job.

Getting a PC(aka DA) will help take the look of your vehicle to the 'next level'. Its a night and day improvement over hand application of products and even ones applied with a lager orbital buffer.

When you are speaking of the products you want to start out with the least aggressive to get the job done. #80 is kind of a universal 'goto' product, it can tackle swirls, fine scratches and then polish up very nice preparing the surface for a wax of your choice. Its a mild cleaner/polish all in one, if you need to get a little more agressive #83 is next in line, it to is a cleaner/polish.

                Re: New, need advice.

Ah, so the #80 will take care of DC#1 and DC#2 then i can jump to the NXT I have, which seems to be pretty good.

Do you recommend claying after I wash?

                1. Wash.
                2. #80
                3. NXT

?? Is the #80 stuff something I'd work into the fender 3 times over, wiping it off with my http://www.meguiars.com/?car-wash-to...er-(Three-Pack)

Or apply to the entire car, then put a clean pad on the DA and go over the entire car to remove it? Also what kind of Pads are good to use?

Also, what's equal to the G100A? Is that the Porter-Cable 7242 with Meguiars name on it? Am I better off buying the Meguiars version?

                  btw

                      Re: New, need advice.

                      Well, lets see...

If you haven't clayed before, it is always good.

                      1. Wash
                      2. Clay
                      3. #80
                      4. Nxt Wax - 2 coats is best

With #80, you would work it back and forth slowly in a 1.5 by 1.5 or so foot square, in a couple directions to keep it even, working it until it goes to more of a greasy clear color. Then just wipe it off before drying with the Supreme Shine MF towels.

With Meguiar's pads, you would use the 8006 for #80 and the 9006 for wax. You can remove the final coat of wax by hand, or by putting a bonnet, or 2 as needed, over a 7006 pad.

The Meguiar's version has a lifetime warranty. It costs a little more, but autodetailingsolutions.com has some nice packages, that kind of bring the price down. The Porter Cable version only has a 1yr warranty, but it is a solid tool.

I think ADS also has a nice microfiber towel sale at the moment as well, esp on 3 packs.
