  • Scratches in newly painted part

    Hi everybody!

I had a small exterior plastic part painted to match my car's overall paint.
Immediately after picking it up from the paint shop, I waxed it with NXT Tech Wax. On first look, everything was fine, but then I held the part under a light and discovered that it was full of fine swirls.
After reading the forums here, I learned that you are not supposed to wax freshly painted parts. But now it is too late.

To get rid of the swirls, I tried Scratch X (didn't work) and a German brand wax/ polish product (didn't work either). If anything, there are now even more scratches.

    Please help!
Should I maybe wait before trying to remove the swirls again?
Is it worth trying "Step 1", even if Scratch X did not work (maybe scratch X is for bigger scratches only)?
Or did I ruin the part for good and have to get it re-painted?
Is it very important to use the right towel for "swirl removing"? As it is just a small part, I did not want to use one of my meguiar's MFT/ terrys (to keep them clean) and just used an old, clean cotton shirt. Wrong decision?
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

As it is a freshly painted surface I would not do anything until it has finished curing as you will only be putting more scratchs/swirls into the soft paint. After it has finished is curing then you can start to look into removing the swirls as long as you haven't made the marks in the paint work tooooo deep.

      OK, thanks for this comment.
So I'll wait a few weeks before trying to remove the swirls.
Should I then start with "Step 1" or go straight for Scratch X?
What is your choice of towels if it comes to scratch/ swirl removing?

I don't think you need to wait to polish the part, fresh paint is buffed all the time in bodyshops. It's waxing you need to wait with.

I would suggest using ScratchX again, but this time use a foam applicator pad for applying the product. Cotton or MF will tend to absorb the lubricating ingredients, leaving mostly the abrasives behind. Plus the cotton fibers themselves can leave marring. But this time you need to work the scratchX in really well, untill it goes almost clear, to make sure the abrasives have completely broken down.

Re: Scratches in newly painted part

I would give it a quick wash/dry then straight to the scratchX and applicator pad as you would want to try the least aggressive method first. If after 2 to 3 tries with that and it still isn't removing them then go up to scratchX with a 100% terry towel. Try not to do an area greater than an A4 peice of paper as the product can dry out before you have used all of its swirl remover qualities.

If that doesn't work then you will have to use a Dual Action polisher. Useing the applicator pad with scratchX shouldn't put scratchs in. If you need help got to showcargarage .com and check out the free video(s) there.
