  • Need polish with NXT?

I use NXT wash and the NXT wax on my '04 TL - LOVE it. I follow up with using the Quick Detail mist.

I have heard many things about NXT - it cannot be layered, it removes what was there prior etc. I was also told to use a polish, but if I then put on NXT aren't I removing the polish?

Also, regarding polish - if a car has clear coat, how or what is the polish really doing then to deepen the paint color etc. if it never touches the paint?

    Appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks!

I can't answer all the questions but here is what I have noticed. I use #81 Hand Polish on my Clear Coat paint and it really deepens the look of the paint when applied before NXT Wax. I have found that the #81 is the only way to go in the polish line for my paint. I wouldn't do it anyother way.

Also I have found by doing on layer of NXT then waiting 12 hours or so and applying a second layer it too also deepens the look of the paint. Just what I have found after applying NXT a dozen times to the same vehicle.

      Hi tbone2004,

      Welcome to Meguiar's Online!

There is a little bad information out on the web about NXT Tech Wax, if you pay attention to the people who are posting it you will notice they all appear to use other companies waxes. I often read of people time and time again, try to position Tech Wax as though it's an abrasive rubbing compound! which is ludicrous. Some of these people have admitted that they have never even tried the product, yet they post their opinion as though it were fact. Just a note, some of these people have their own axe to grind or an agenda to push.

What's most important is what your eyes tell you.

      As to your questions;

NXT contains a sleight amount of a very specialized cleaner. This helps to eliminate swirls and scratches. This is one of the reasons why NXT Tech Wax makes paint look so clear, wet and glossy. Some people position this as a negative, but no other wax that I have ever used in over 15 years of detailing cars delivers the results NXT Tech Wax delivers and part of the reason is the ingredients that are in it. Meguiar's chemists know paint. They also know how to create a formula that creates rich high gloss, crystal clear results.

As far as layering goes, every car that has ever come to one of our Saturday detailing clinics with "Layers" of other products, has always left looking dramatically better, more clear, higher gloss, less cobwebs and swirls after we remove the layers and then apply Tech Wax.

Here are two examples of cars that had multiple layers of [i]polish[/b] that now look dramatically better with two coats of NXT Tech Wax.

North County Corvette Club Detail Day at Meguiar's

Two coats of any companies product tends to always look better than one coat. Adding layer after layer after layer is mostly hype. The idea that you can make your paint look more and more clear with each additional layer is non-sense. First of all, a clear coat finish can only get so clear. Once it hits the point where it's as clear as it can get, adding another layer of a product that is not clear to start with will not make the clear coat more clear. This is just hype and false information that most people either don't think through, or don't challenge because they don't want to start a flame war.

Meguiar's believes in "The Law of Diminishing Returns".

You can read more about that here,

      13. Are multiple coats of wax beneficial? (Layering)

      and here,

      14. Can Meguiar's waxes be "Layered"?

As far as the claim that more and more layers adds more and more protection goes

The above Corvette has somewhere around 15 layers of a product on it but when mud puddle water was splashed onto all these layers, it ate holes into the paint,

Here's a close-up, note if you look closely you can see the downward angle around the edges that show the paint has been eaten away.

As far as polishing goes, Meguiar’s pure polishes, (non-abrasive), like the Deep Crystal Polish, #7 Show Car Glaze and #81 Hand Polish, all add deep, brilliant high gloss to any paint. The trade secret oils used in Meguiar’s polishes are famous for winning car shows for decades. Paint at the microscopic level is covered with surface imperfections, and with time and normal wear and tear, the surface becomes more permeable. This allows Meguiar’s polishes to penetrate into the finish so that when you wipe of the polish, you are still leaving some behind because it wasn't just sitting on the surface.

An easy experiment is to wash your car, then apply some painters tape down the middle of the hood and the apply a Meguiar’s pure polish to one half and remove the excess. Now remove the tape, inspect and decide which side has a richer color?

If you removed all of the polish from the surface when you wiped it off... why is one half still richer in color?

Do you need to apply a pure polish before using NXT Tech Wax? No. Meguiar's has always stated that applying a pure polish is an extra step.

As far as NXT removing all of the polish, this isn't true either. Let you own eyes be the judge. I demonstrate this every weekend at the detailing clinics at Meguiar's. With the Meguiar's system, each step is continually increasing and adding to the total beauty of the finish, not taking away from it. Let you own eyes be the judge. When you see people posting this kind of stuff, ask yourself, "What's their motive?" Whose wax are they using?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but some people just don't like it when your opinion doesn't match their opinion.

      Trust your eyes.

        Excellent reply Mike - thanks!

I will add some polish into my routine - and check it out. So far I am very excited about the NXT ease of use and results. Thanks for clearing up the myths and other chatter I had heard. You are right - the eyes don't lie. And right now mine are telling me you guys have outdone yourselves with NXT.

          I agree...

I have a number of very expensive custom cars coming up in the future that I'm going to do the buff out on and they are all going to get two applications of NXT. Of course, I'll post a write-up.
