  • Clay leaves spot behind...

I’m asking advice here because someone on the Belgium Meguiars forum posted a question today about an issue I’ve had myself for a few times now.

We both have been detailing for some time now, and after I’ve taken part of a Meguiars Detail Day, I know we’re working the clay like it should.

Here’s what I do: I take a clean clay, spray QD on it, spray QD on the surface I’m going to work at (30 cm² (1 foot square)) and start “sliding” the clay over the finish.

Like it’s supposed to do, I feel the clay “sticking” to the finish whenever it picks up above bonded surface contaminants. Sometimes however, the clay really “sticks” (even after a new application of QD on the surface and clay) and whenever I look at the finish, there’s a spot (where the clay got stuck) and it looks different. It’s not shiny like it’s supposed to be. (even had a discoloration at some point)

Now the guy that asked about it, spent about an hour with scratchX to get the spot out and get it shiny again. I needed a few passes with #83 to get it out.

It’s the first time I’m having problems with the clay. Never had this problem before so could it be a “fault” in a certain range of productions? Or are we doing something wrong?

I've had that happen.........because I didn't have enough QD on the surface, even though I thought I did.

Since you think you are using enough QD, I really don't know what the solution is for you. I'm sure someone else will chime in soon!

Are we talking about a "smudge" or clay left on the paint, as in a film of clay residue?

      or

Are we talking about marring i.e. micro-scratching "in" the paint?

Smudging is no big deal because all you have to do is gently wipe it off with a microfiber polishing cloth, if the smudge isn't wiping off then perhaps it's not really a smudge. Smudging usually happens when people move the clay bar to slowly over the paint and at the end of their throw or stroke, (when they stop the direction of the movement of their hand and begin to move it back to another direction), sometimes because the clay as a pause in this section it will deposit some of itself... thus a smudge.

We see smudging usually from people that are new to claying at our Saturday classes all the time, often times they panic thinking something horrible has happened!

Then we will calmly wipe the area gently but with focused attention while explaining the cause and when they look again all is well and normal.

In a worse case scenario, it could take a little paint cleaner like ScratchX or Deep Crystal Paint cleaner to loosen and remove the smudge, but it's still no big deal and nothing to worry about.

If there is some kind of defect in the paint and it's not a smudge, then this sounds like something else is going wrong and something is leaving a defect --> in <-- the paint, as in a below surface defect.

Examine the defect or what it is your seeing and be sure of the what exactly the defect is that you're seeing and please post back here and we'll drill a little deeper.

        Thanks for your response Mike.

I'm detailing the Volvo V70 again this weekend and I'll pay attention to the claying method if it happens again, I'll document it.

I have had this happen and I found it is from too little Spray Detailer.

Welcome back to me, huh... It has been a long time.

This does tend to happen but usually with a new bar of clay. The 'smudge' he is referring to, at least in my experience, is residue that is imprinted not a mar. Wiping this does not remove it but when you hit it with the DA it readily comes out.

Thanks Madsekci for starting this thread. I didn't see it earlier, so I open my thread a couple of minutes ago.
